Het is toch knap hoe Dazai van de monsterlijk egoïstische Naoji een mens van vlees en bloed weet te maken, wiens redenaties weliswaar onnavolgbaar zijn, maar toch ook invoelbaar. En dat via een nagelaten testament nog wel, in het voorlaatste hoofdstuk. De ondergaande zon is niet mijn favoriete Dazai – luister daarvoor de volgende aflevering van onze podcast Aap Noot Mishima! – maar het blijft een sleutelroman in Dazai's bescheiden oeuvre. Een tikkie larmoyant, dat wel, maar laat dat je vooral niet afschrikken. Het is zeker het lezen waard, al was het maar een schaduwzijde van Japan te leren kennen waarover, destijds tenminste, niet zo vaak geschreven werd.

Niet helemaal mijn kop thee, met alle respect verder voor de grande dame van de Nederlandse poëzie.

Flies through the last couple of years, which is a shame – where are Connor and Joey? The level of detail from the first few years, that's what I've wanted for the whole book to be. But then again, you have to keep some stories behind for the next book, right? Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I've been admiring Broad's development as a YouTuber for years now, and this book again showcases his talents really well. He's a born storyteller!

9/10 rounded up, but what a great collection of short stories! Chung's writing is about as bright as that golden ship sailing through the heavens in the penultimate story. The full range of weirdness on display here makes for a very diverse reading experience, even though all of it is delightfully creepy. It's riveting prose as well, translator Anton Hur did an outstanding job. Cover design is also very much on point. It was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize 2022, but I wouldn't have mind if it won. Honford Star have gold in their hands with Bora Chung.

So concise, so revolutionary for its time. Epic in scope, ace in execution. Gibson’s writing is hard-boiled crime, cutting-edge sci-fi and literary all in one.
