Given that there's been a few volumes of this out I thought that I what I would read would be better. The writing isn't my style with character exposition -> action -> more exposition, it affects the pacing dramatically. The setting seems interesting, another post apocalyptic story in similar vein to The Last of Us. I'm not sure if I'll continue to read. The last issue set it up in a way where I'm curious, so maybe I'll check volume 2 out.

Fun ride
4 stars
This book was a really fun read. The world building isn't exactly too deep (at least in the first volume) but what we do see it is fun. It feels like a post apocalyptic fantasy adventure story. The main characters are fun and their interactions are great. There's a hook about if a certain prophecy will happen or not. The action and visuals are great.

Amazing
5 stars
This book is amazing. The art, the colors, the story, the characters, the mystery. The world building is top notch. When it started I felt like "another fantasy setting trying to make it feel modern", but boy was I wrong. Everything feels though out, and I just want more and more. The art is gorgeous, the covers are perfect examples of what to expect inside. I can't wait for this team to put out more stories in this universe

Life goes on
4 stars
Reading this, I feel that that point of the story is not really about the details of the world. The world is ending, everything is gone, but there's no real questions on how we got here nor any answers. It's not about how the world ended. And it's barely about the background of our characters. We know a little about where they come from, but the focus here is who they are, what motivates them and how they grow with each other. How we find love in the middle of darkness. It's a beautiful story and I'm excited to keep reading more.

Reread
5 stars
I stopped reading Black Hammer a few years back so I know a little what happens in the future, but it's fascinating to re-read this now.
I forgot how good this is. It's re-using hero templates from Marvel/DC but it feels so fresh. This first volume is an intro to the characters, who they were before and where they are now.
Jeff Lemire was known at this point for his small town stories, and we can see him flexing that muscle real hard here. Knowing the future, Lemire is great at many types of stories, so it's awesome getting some of those glimpses here.
The art fits the story amazingly. I'm so excited to get caught up.

Interesting Start
3 stars
I heard a lot of good things about this book and I'm very interested in the universe that this ultimately led to. But, this book was not super exciting, at least the first three issues. It felt cookie cutter and uninspired. The protagonist felt boring, except for the writing segments. I would have loved a book just about an author trying to figure out how to write a book. But the last two chapters of the book is where things got increasingly interesting. If I were reading this monthly, I would have considered dropping it, but I'm glad I picked this up in trade and I'm very excited for volume 2.

Great world
4 stars
The world in Wynd is fantastical but also feels though out. The world building in this first volume is pretty great. The different factions, species, magic, it all feels great and I'm eager to learn more about it. The art is beautiful and it elevates the world even more. The only downside is the characters aren't super fleshed out and their motivations aren't too deep. I think it's a small con given that it makes sense that the setup and world building happened in this first volume and I'm eager to see what adventures await.

Incredible
5 stars
There are some heavy topics covered in this book. But I feel they are important to share out. Specially if you are a man, this point of view of a woman in a male-centric workplace makes you realize all the things that you may have missed. A must read for anyone who loves graphic novels

Glue
4 stars
The story is a big retread of many previous books/comics but from different perspectives. I do enjoy seeing Yana and Marda again, and specially how Marda grows and changes is the biggest highlight. But it definitely feels less contained than the other books and I think it affects the pacing a bit. The last part of the book was stellar though.

Setup
3 stars
I feel James Tynion loves large casts of characters and he also loves creepy/supernatural settings with a central mystery. Given that this was one of his earlier works, I can see how he built up some of his later works (Nice House on the Lake) with what he practiced here.
The book itself has been ok for the first volume. This first one only has 4 issues instead of the standard 5, so I feel I needed that extra one to fill out the story a bit more. The mystery has been set up, with more twists at the end. The characters are a lil bit archetypes and not super deep. The setting is also ok. If it weren't James Tynion (and the nice art) I'm not sure I would have continued to the second volume. But I have faith in him that I will try it out.
Ricardo reviewed Department of Truth, Vol 1 by James Tynion IV
What is truth?
4 stars
This was such an interesting read. The concept is pretty cool, I think James Tynion has played around with similar ideas in some of his other books. But what really surprised me how Tynion leaned in to some sensitive conspiracies and was able to navigate through it. It felt it didn't take any sides except for those impacted the most by it. The mysteries are starting to kickoff by the end, leaving you with questioning what is the truth in everything you've read so far.
It is an uncomfortable read, which I believe to be on purpose, and the art style backs it up. Only complaint would be that the characters are not really the focus here, but the overall concept. Still great and I will continue to read.

Control
5 stars
The main conflict in this second volume was how to maintain the peace in the house. We had a soft reset in volume 2 which made for a confusing but interesting setup. By the end we are aware that there are controls for everything, including Walter. The team decides the best way to move forward is to kill Walter and try to survive without him. Only to learn that it was all a ruse. There's also the revelation that this is not the end and there are more nice houses out there. We sometimes believe we are in control when we actually don't even know what is going on.

Goop

I think Lost has burned me so deeply that any mystery that I start just makes me instinctively think "is this another Lost?". When I started this book that's the first gut feeling I got. All the characters, with names and codenames, also made it hard to follow. But as I kept reading, and reached this middle point, I can say I am hooked. The characters are interesting, and I think I can sort of follow who is who (this is something that happens more to me in written mediums instead of TV/film). The mystery is there, but I think what really hooks me is the characters and their relationships to Walter. At this point, I just want to know more about Walter. Not what he is, but who he is.

My thoughts

I did not enjoy Convergence all that much. I did like the characters but I felt the overall plot was slow. But without Convergence there wouldn't be Cataclysm, and I did enjoy Cataclysm a bunch. It's interesting, exciting and a lot of jedi died. It's kinda brutal how the writing group for this era are trigger happy killing so many jedi. Xiri and Phan-Tu were great, and seeing their relationship grow was good. Axel was so dumb, and his redemption was a little too good, but his character is great. His relationship with others is the best part. Also, nice seeing Yaddle being so involved. So overall, really liked it!
