Book 2 of the Divergent trilogy. Tris tries to understand why Erudite faction are trying to destroy the others, and tries to keep the remainder of her faction safe. Meanwhile mostly acting like an idiot and lying to everyone about what she's doing, usually for no good reason. Continues an interesting story, but not as good as the first book.

I liked Insurgent even better than Divergent which I also rated with 5 stars after reading. Insurgent is extremely thrilling and I cannot wait to read Allegiant to see how everything wraps up. I am so thankful for reading the trilogy after all the books are already out because the ending leaves me craving so much more. I have no idea what happens when the population of Chicago collides with the people outside the fence and what made the people act like they did in the video.

That's it. I'm done. I tried. I really tried. [b:Divergent|13335037|Divergent (Divergent, #1)|Veronica Roth|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1328559506s/13335037.jpg|13155899] held my attention long enough to make me think there was hope for this series. Then this sucker came along and I discovered that I didn't really care about anyone or anything Ms. Roth was feeding me. Zero caring.

I wanted this series to fill the gap that had been left since [b:Mockingjay|7260188|Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3)|Suzanne Collins|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1358275419s/7260188.jpg|8812783] ended. No such luck. :(

When I read Divergent, I thought it was an insipid, trite, and futile waste of time. But everyone kept talking about how much they loved it, and eventually I decided that maybe I was mistaken. So I read Insurgent. It was at least as bad. My fundamental problem with these books is that I simply cannot believe in the world, or the characters, the author has created. Yes, the plot is fast paced and it's easy to get through these short books, but a quick read is not always a good read (not always a bad one either, mind you).

I suppose I'll get around to reading the third one about the time that particular movie comes out because by then I will have begun to doubt my impression again. Oh well. There are worse things in life, and sometimes these things are worth the read just so you know …

Okay, maybe it's 2.5 stars, but although I'll read the next, and hopefully last book in this series, this one kept annoying me. I can see how keeping things unknown for so long makes sense since Tris is the narrator and is in the dark, but it became more and more exasperating. Why are these people doing the things they do? The world of this book makes so little sense, and when finally some light is shed on things it's too little or too meaningless. It's like doing a puzzle with too few pieces and when someone gives you a handful of new ones they only fit if you discard 80% of the previous ones. I've no great hope that another book will redeem this series, but although this book at times felt like a chore I'm still curious where things are go so I'm somewhat looking forward to it …

The Divergent trilogy starts in a futuristic, distopian Chicago where the people are divided into 5 factions - Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the, well, erudites), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the crazy^Wcourageous) and Amity (the nice ones). The kids can choose their faction when they are 16; the "usual" choice is to stay in the faction where you've been raised; the heroin, Tris, chooses to transfer from Abnegation to Dauntless. The first book sets up the universe, and obviously at the end of the first book, shit happens and the society explodes. In the second book, we pick the heroes in the aftermath of these events; factions are divided (both between them and internally), it's a mess, everyone's against everyone else, conspiracies everywhere, and so on. As for the first book, it's not mindblowing, but it's still a very enjoyable read.

This one did not have a rhythm I could get into. The flow was distracting and I felt it to be choppy kind of like being in a rocky boat on the sea. It was like we are safe, it's over back into oh no we are not, simulations again. Invade this place, get trapped back to rescued and escaping again. I love you. I don't trust you. Do I know who you are ? Okay yes I do. Then the are you dead are you alive? Kill this person don't kill that person. What team are you on are you really a traitor or factionless. Is it okay for you to be a traitor but not okay for others. ugh. Oh brother. The ending was a bit of a relief for me. Hopefully Four and Tris can pull themselves together in the next one.
