NeaOnnim reviewed Babel by R.F. Kuang
Alternative history from a non-white perspective
5 stars
R.F. Kuang creates a fascinating semi-alternative 19th century world in which languages play a vital role. It made me appreciate the variety of languages and their particularities. The story explores western societies from an academic migrant perspective. I found it refreshing to read a stories that does not omit colonial continuities and power struggles but incorporates different perspectives on (anti-)racism, (anti-)colonialism, feminism and the role one might play when you become aware of these injustices. Babel is a story of four friends about languages, culture, education, power and privileges, enhanced with a tint of fantasy.
