Avoiding shellfish was easy. The stoning of adulterers proved a little more difficult - and potentially controversial. Was it enough to walk up to an adulterer and gently touch them with a stone? Even that could be grounds for accusations of assault, especially with female adulterers in Manhattan. So what's a good Bible-reading boy to do?

Raised in a secular family but increasingly interested in the relevance of faith in our modern world, A.J. Jacobs decides to dive in headfirst and attempt to obey the hundreds of less-publicised rules. The resulting spiritual journey is at once funny and profound, reverent and irreverent, personal and universal, and will make you see history's most influential book with new eyes.

Entertaining look at what it would mean to live the Bible's rules literally. I enjoyed the Old Testament section more than the New Testament, as it seems the rules are crazier the further back you go.

I so hope someone looking for an actual religious book reads this by mistake. It's a cracking, humorous and eye-opening read, going through the many aspects of taking both the Old and New Testament literally. Jacobs highlights even further the futility of following the entire Bible to the letter, with all of it's contradictions and sets up some challenging ideas through the many people he talks to throughout the year.

I want to use "theological cooties" in conversation sometime - his wife, Julie deserves a medal for her grounded and humorous standing throughout, especially for royally messing with the purity laws. Brilliant.

The book was amusing and well written. It was by definition quirky, as the author explored the religious fringes. Not merely left and right, but up, down and sideways - people who believe in the literal truth of the bible and strive to obey its multitudinous commands.

There wasn't much to discuss. Amusing quirks do not go very far. He dredged up some insights from time to time, but they were pretty shallow.

I laughed out loud a number of times while reading this book. There were perhaps times when the book verges on being simply a "project," as opposed to a meaningful reflection on religion, but overall, I think the insight the author provides into religious culture and lifestyle is surprisingly full of depth. And at the very least, it's fun to read!

I finally finished this one, and I have to admit that it was interesting. However, I did not think it was that much of a big deal. Since I am a skeptical person, and not religious, a lot of this book simply confirmed that a lot of religious people simply pick and choose from the Bible (or their religious book of choice) the things they like or that suit their values, leaving the ones they dislike behind. It's the cafeteria practice that fundamentalists decry that moderates do, even though fundamentalists do it as well. This is a point that Jacobs himself makes in the book towards the end. He goes on to write: "This year showed me beyond a doubt that everyone practices cafeteria religion. It's not just the moderates. Fundamentalists do it too. They can't heap everything on their plate" (328). Jacobs comes on the side of saying that …
