Fatherland is set in an alternative world where Hitler has won the Second World War. It is April 1964 and one week before Hitler's 75th birthday. Xavier March, a detective of the Kriminalpolizei, is called out to investigate the discovery of a dead body in a lake near Berlin's most prestigious suburb.

As March discovers the identity of the body, he uncovers signs of a conspiracy that could go to the very top of the German Reich. And, with the Gestapo just one step behind, March, together with an American journalist, is caught up in a race to discover and reveal the truth -- a truth that has already killed, a truth that could topple governments, a truth that will change history.

Hm.

I saw the movie years ago and remembered not liking it too much. The book was a nice read, one of the better alt-history stories I've read. But I felt that the scope was too big or rather the build-up and reveal were too rushed considering the topic.

Review of 'Fatherland' on 'Storygraph'

I had heard much of the book before, and so I was looking forward to finally reading it. (Even though as a German I was a little uncomfortable buying it and was half expecting some sort of put-down.)

Harris tells a suspenseful story as he slowly works to the grand finale, finally explaining what happened differently to lead to the parallel world he has set up: a Germany that has won the War and has somehow managed to keep the Allied Forces from invading. To me, the most impressive thing was the way he describes the disbelief and shock of the protagonists when they find out what had happened.

A very satifying read, and not as awkward as it could have been by a long shot, given the subject matter.

It seemed like this book could be set in Cold War Germany instead of alternate universe Germany for all the differences that it had. It really didn't feel like anything was truly different about the setting of the book. I suppose that it would sell more copies being set in an alternate timeline though.
