The sun is setting on humanity. The night now belongs to voracious demons that arise as the sun sets, preying upon a dwindling population forced to cower behind ancient and half-forgotten symbols of power. These wards alone can keep the demons at bay, but legends tell of a Deliverer: a general--some would say prophet--who once bound all mankind into a single force that defeated the demons. Those times, if they ever existed, are long past. The demons are back, and the return of the Deliverer is just another myth . . . or is it?Out of the desert rides Ahmann Jardir, who has forged the warlike desert tribes of Krasia into a demon-killing army. He has proclaimed himself Shar'Dama Ka, the Deliverer, and he carries ancient weapons--a spear and a crown--that give credence to his claim. Sworn to follow the path of the first Deliverer, he has come north to …

The Desert Spear is the story of Jardir, a brand new main character into the world of the Demon Cycle. As excited I was to continue Arlen's narration, I was drawn into Jardir's backstory that was finely interwoven with events that were told in the Warded Man.

I don't feel this is a spoiler, but it's worth warning fans that the story starts anew instead of continuing from the cliffhanger of the previous novel. I hated this at first, but grew to love Jardir and I think you will too. The rich world-building and escalation of the scale of the story, as well as the changes to human society are your rewards in this fine novel once we pick up the 'present day' storyline.

Unfortunately, Peter Brett is still terrible at writing romance and family drama, and yet he keeps inserting these as subplots that deter from more thrilling and …

The pacing is weird in the first book. I had a constant feeling of "okay, the story is getting interesting here — let's switch to another character!" Well, the second book starts with the childhood of the most hated character in the first book. And keeps describing it for what felt like half the book, full of unnecessary detail.

But somehow it grows on you. I eventually succumbed to it, and just read it as another story set in the same world. The Krasian culture is introduced in minute detail. It is not a very nice culture. I thought, okay, this author hates Middle Eastern cultures. It can still be a good book if I ignore this aspect. This works. But also books #3 and #4 show that Brett is making a bigger play. He shows this oppressive culture and its effects on people, but then gradually (over multiple books) …

Review to come.

While I found the Warded Man overly simplistic and with too little drama and conflicts too shallow, this sequel is much improved. After the simply childhood stories of the main characters this book introduces their human opponent with as much detail. From there on the drama unfolds.

With this book the Brett's storytelling is taking a leap forward and while I did not want to start reading at first because of the weak first installment, I could not stop reading once I started. Especially once everything is in place for the central conflict, the drama really gets going and the second half of the book was gone way too fast.

Now I am looking forward to the third book ...

The Desert Spear starts pretty badly as we retrace the coming of age story of the Sha Demakha.
We learn very little of value to the plot during this whole first section.
The Audible.com version of the audiobook is split into 4 pards and the first part of the audiobook corresponds to the first section and can be skipped without much loss.

Some of the characters gain a bit more depth, but many remain flat stereotypes.
This is both a weakness and a strength, the most clear example is the abusive father figure. on hone hand he's a complete stereotype, on the other hand you grow to hate him intensely and in turn came very much about the fate his poor daughter.
