In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again.

Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of …

What a ride.

I hate myself a little for that title.

Every time I read a King novel, I'm somehow freshly reminded at how good he is at writing characters. Each one is incredibly unique, and frankly I don't know how he continues to do it despite his astoundingly prolific career that's now several decades long.

Mr. Mercedes is a departure from my normal King read. I usually pick out a classic horror every October to read, but my step-mother-in-law (I know, it's the best I can come up with), said I absolutely had to read this series. Without any spoilers I can confidently say that she has a severely, and wonderfully, twisted mind. This is roughly the equivalent of a an incredibly well down Netflix adaptation of a true crime story.

There are no bumps or jumps in the night, no creepy crawlies, or murderous clowns. The accuracy and...probability of this story …

My first King novel in 24 years (not counting 'On Writing', which I read last year). Having read almost all of his books religiously as a teenager, I decided to part ways with King when he killed Mattie in 'Bag of Bones', which I found unforgivable. I've had some time to forgive and forget now, particularly forget.

I enjoyed Mr. Mercedes, despite not liking the villain, and look forward to reading the next book in the series. I may even have a look at some of the other books I missed in the past 20 odd years.

It was an interesting story, but very generic for what I expected from Stephen King. The whole book followed a very trope-y arch, with some of the relationships (particularly Bill and Janelle) feeling very forced and random to advance the plot. Not what I expected from him, but good nonetheless.

I'm not yet sure about Mr. Mercedes. 3 stars? 4? I don't know. The team is unconventional and diverse, which I like, the killer not so much. He has a very strong been there, done that feel to him.
I do like the unpredictable victims. Often in books it's quite clear that no established character is going to die, but here anyone can die at any time (or at least almost, since the trilogy is named after the retired cop).
I always connected Stephen King with horror, so I was honestly surprised to find a crime novel. Probably should have read the description 😃

I thought this book dragged on way longer than it really should of. Detective like novels aren't really ones I'm all that familiar with, but I do know that you don't mention the who done it in the first few chapters. The first half of the book dragged on and on, and I was like "Come on, King, I don't care about all these details." The second half did pick up some, and I liked when Bill started to work with Holly, but I'm not sure I'd read another King wanna be detective novel.

When I picked up Stephen King’s new novel Mr Mercedes, I felt anxious and nervous. This novel has been billed as King’s first hard-boiled detective novel and it reminded me of his past attempts at pulp fiction. Joyland was billed as a pulp novel and by all accounts it had the makings of a good dime-store novel but the end result felt like King stuck to what he does best and only paying homage to the genre. Mr Mercedes has all the hallmarks of a hard-boiled novel, a brooding and jaded detective, a femme fatale and mysterious villain but this read more like a cat and mouse suspense thriller. Don’t get me wrong, this novel is a homage to detective fiction; Philip Marlow gets a mention and a fedora even makes an appearance. Though the third person narrative and chapters focusing solely on the killer meant we are in a …
