An unexpected quest. Two worlds at stake. Are you ready?

Days after Oasis founder James Halliday's contest, Wade Watts makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday's vault, waiting for his heir to find, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the Oasis a thousand times more wondrous, and addictive, than even Wade dreamed possible. With it comes a new riddle and a new quest. A last Easter egg from Halliday, hinting at a mysterious prize. And an unexpected, impossibly powerful, and dangerous new rival awaits, one who will kill millions to get what he wants. Wade's life and the future of the Oasis are again at stake, but this time the fate of humanity also hangs in the balance.

A bit more unbelievable than the first

Ready Player One is one of the greatest books I ever read. As such the sequel is likely disappoint. Cline's writing is still spell-binding and leads one wanting to turn the page. The sequel claims to start only a few days after the end of the previous, but so much of the world has changed, like Artimus now hating Z.

Cline tries to get the magic of Haladay's contest again in the quest for the siren's soul. But while Holiday's contest took years to complete, Anarch gives our protagonist only hours to get it done. The number of times that the characters feel free to joke and guess the outcome of an invent doesn't seem believable at a time they also are fighting for the survival of much of the human race with less than 12 hours to complete it.

That being said the story is still very good, and …

The sequel clearly shares much of the first book's DNA, but somehow didn't satisfy me the way the first one did. The nostalgic 80s references in RP1 seemed a bit more subtle, and fit the story better. What made RP1 so unique is exactly why it can't be duplicated, I guess. The quest in the first one was a game that I (as a child of the 80s) would definitely want to play myself. The second one, not so much. For example, I'm a huge Prince fan, but I couldn't see myself really enjoying a visit to the Afterworld.

If you're the kind of person who likes spending time watching Twitch streamers, you'll probably love this book, because it's essentially a transcription of someone's live stream.

Review of 'Ready Player Two' on 'Goodreads'

While I really liked Ready Player One, this book seems like it was more of a sequel for sequel's sake. it lost most of the great character development and new ideas of the first book, and just wasn't as enjoyable to read.

Note that I listened to the audiobook, rather than reading the book.

Review of 'Ready Player Two' on 'Goodreads'

An utterly disappointing sequel.

Ready Player One was great because it fun and fresh and thrilling. Because of the story, not because of the writing. Even in spite of the writing. Because Ernest Cline is not a good writer.

RP2 takes the fresh/fun stuff from RP1, injects it with steroids, then hits copy & paste a million times. It's astounding (not really) that this book made it past his beta readers (including Stephen Spielberg) and editor.

The first 20% of the book is exposition. So is most of the remaining 80%.

Bad pacing? Check. Bad dialogue? Check. Wooden characters and an unsympathetic protagonist? Check. 13,000 adverbs in one book? Check.

Blech.
