Ulysses is a modernist novel by Irish writer James Joyce. It was first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 and then published in its entirety in Paris by Sylvia Beach on 2 February 1922, Joyce's 40th birthday. It is considered one of the most important works of modernist literature and has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement." This was finally going to be the year I read Ulysses, and for my first time through I decided I was going to just dive in and read it all on my own, without notes or any preparation, and only a vague memory of the larger plot points of the original Homer epic. I did not expect it to take me four months to do it.

I have no fear of big, difficult books — I breezed right through 2666 and Infinite Jest and the complete works of Mark Danielewski — so I thought “just how hard could it be?” The answer is very hard. maybe not all lit-ruhchuh is supposed to be enjoyable to read. ulysses succeeds in being not-enjoyable with flying colors. i read about that dude and his shaving mirror probably twenty goddamn times before i finally stopped trying to read this thing.
