A grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one …

3-4 Sterne

Amazing

After having spent months reading through a very long series, I was finding it hard to pick up and get through another book.

This book cured me. At once it is annoying and compelling - the main character is at once understandable, relatable and a little strange to us.

It's a great story which will stick with you... and after reading it, you can search out other material (there's one great movie, and another not so great version).

Uh. This was fine. I did really love some moments but for the most part it was uninteresting and the writing was pretty meh. (Now this is my 5th Backman read, I'm very familiar with his writing style. Usually his amazing insights on humans make up for his straightforward prose (which isn't the type of prose that i normally like), but I didn't find that here.)

This is by far one of my favorite books in 2021. In A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman—a one time fork-lift operator in a Swedish supply chain—introduces us to the stereotypical curmudgeon, Ove, as he tries to buy an "eePAd" from some pesky, hipster sales representative.

Ove is a man grieving the loss of his wife and, in a deeper way, angry that he was dealt a sour hand by life. In his younger days, he was expecting a child with his wife Sonja prior to a horrible bus accident in Spain. This accident, caused by a drunken bus driver, crippled Sonja from the waist-down and took their baby. Later in life, Sonja was diagnosed with terminal cancer and left Ove alone in the world. Thus, the story revolves around Ove wishing to kill himself to be with his wife but being comically interrupted in each suicide attempt by his …

At the beginning, I just could not understand the relationship between Ove and Parvaneh. It looks wired. Parvaneh is active and Ove passive. Parvaneh is always asking and Ove always giving. It was unbalanced. I did not know why Ove allowed her to get into his life. Maybe Ove liked Parvaneh because her personality likes his deceased wife Sonja? Maybe Parvaneh knew this and took the advantage of him? Or did Parvaneh love Ove, not the father-and-daughter’s love, but lovers’ love? It made little sense to me.

Until one day I suddenly understand why Ove could have this relationship with Parvaneh -- he wanted to be useful, too.

Ove lost his wife and then his job. He did not have any children or relatives. His friend had Alzheimer’s disease. The world dumped him. He was USELESS. This is the worst thing could happen to a human being. We are so …

Review of 'A Man Called Ove' on 'Goodreads'

This book came highly recommended but noone warned me how much I would cry. Usually when lots of people have recommended a book, it winds up being a slight anticlimax no matter how good, but this book was fabulous, start to finish. I absolutely loved it. And I bawled my eyes out.

5/5

I read this book while on a plane and I must say it was very difficult to explain why I switched between laughing and crying every chapter. Such a beautiful emotional rollercoaster and so well written.
At first Ove feels like a rather unemotional older man who wants nothing to do with the world, and in layers it peels into a heartfelt backstory of why he has become who he is. Facing betrayal and one sadness after another Ove closed himself off from the world until that shell is finally peeled back revealing a rather kind and loving man.
It was such a beautiful story and one of my favorites!
