Discover a terrifying world in the woods in this collection of five hauntingly beautiful graphic stories that includes the online webcomic sensation "His Face All Red," in print for the first time.

Journey through the woods in this sinister, compellingly spooky collection that features four brand-new stories and one phenomenally popular tale in print for the first time. These are fairy tales gone seriously wrong, where you can travel to "Our Neighbor's House"--though coming back might be a problem. Or find yourself a young bride in a house that holds a terrible secret in "A Lady's Hands Are Cold." You might try to figure out what is haunting "My Friend Janna," or discover that your brother's fianc e may not be what she seems in "The Nesting Place." And of course you must revisit the horror of "His Face All Red," the breakout webcomic hit that has been gorgeously translated …

Through the Woods is a horror anthology of 5 different short stories, and I mean SHORT. Each story can be read in ~5 minutes or less, which might be off-putting to people because of how expensive the book is. Through the Woods honestly felt like a mixed bag, with me liking only 2 of the 5 stories: A Lady's Hands Are Cold, and The Nesting Place. The rest of the stories, while certainly not bad, just didn't leave a big impression on me. Here's how I'd rank each one of them:

#5: Our Neighbor's House
My least favorite of the bunch. I liked the art of the environment and red/white sky, but the story was just eh. The ending was also predictable.

#4: My Friend Janna
The scribblings on the notebook were creepy. That's about all I can say for this one, the rest of the story …

1) "There was a girl
& there was a man
and there was the girl's father who said 'You will marry this man.'"

2) "Inside the wall was a pair of hands."

3) "[It] came from the woods (most strange things do)."

4) "After she arrived at her mother's house,
her mother embraced her, kissed her, and sent her to bed.
And once she was in bed she said:
'What a fine night! What a good walk! I knew the wolf wouldn't find me!'
'Oh but you must travel through those woods again & again,' said a shadow at the window, '...and you must be lucky to avoid the wolf every time.
But the wolf... the wolf only needs enough luck to find you once.'"

Through the Woods is a genuinely creepy read. One of the things that affects me most in horror is what is not seen, so I wasn’t entirely sure that it would work for me in graphic novel form, but Emily Carroll’s stories have the right level of suspense and things lurking in the dark. They don't have neat conclusions either, leaving you with that sense of unease.

There’s a few visual references to Little Red Riding Hood but this is not a fairy tale retelling (although Grimm’s original stories do have a similar level of macabre). Don’t go into the woods alone or at night, is common phrase throughout horror, or just simply our childhoods where our parents try and keep us from playing somewhere potentially dangerous. These stories play on that idea, some are about going into the woods and coming a cropper or others are about people who …

Oh my gosh, I loved this. Through the Woods is a collection of short tales that could I guess be considered narrative poetry. The stories are not for the most part at all terrifying, but they speak to that darkness inside you that makes you scared to peek out from under the blankets in case there are monsters lurking nearby. (PS. There are.) The collection is beautifully illustrated and it really adds to the creepy atmosphere of the stories. I feel like I want to buy a copy of this book just to frame some of the illustrations!
