Across the worlds of Shadow, Corwin, prince of blood royal, heir to the throne of Amber, gathers his forces for an assault that will yield up to him the crown that is rightfully his. But, a growing darkness of his own doing threatens his plans, an evil that stretches to the heart of the perfect kingdom itself where the demonic forces of Chaos mass to annihilate Amber and all who would rule there.

One of the most revered names in sf and fantasy, the incomparable Roger Zelazny was honored with numerous prizes—including six Hugo and three Nebula Awards—over the course of his legendary career. Among his more than fifty books, arguably Zelazny’s most popular literary creations were his extraordinary Amber novels. The Guns of Avalon is the second book of The Chronicles of Amber.

I must admit, that after the first one failed to interest me, I listened to in on in the background while playing some game and did not pay too much attention to it.
I like the symbols these books set up - the pattern, Amber (which I keep mixing up with Avalon), ever changeable shadow, the multiverse... But other than that... Everything feels arbitrary, why should gunpowder work here and not there, and where's the line... This book introduces the idea of shadow selves of Amberites, I think, but it presents no issue to our protagonist, casts no doubt in his amnesiac mind of his realness... Oh, and love interests are boring in this book. For all that the pattern is fascinating, this book didn't appear to give one to me.

"Then behold your nemesis!"

You can't fault the books for being brief. Tolkien spent as many pages as this book is long before the Hobbits left The Shire. Details about stitching, taste of food, terrain may seem tedious at the time but when they are absent from the story you miss them. Zelazny does away with unnecessary details and just gives you the story, but it comes across as being rushed or a draft of a larger story.

I enjoyed Book of Amber #1 and #2, but I think I'll stop the story here. I find the books are too simple for what is a complicated story. I like time spent world building or describing animals in detail. With this you are given a striped horse with feathers and that's it.

These details are omitted from the story probably because they don't help the plot at all, and I can …
