Towers of Midnight is a fantasy novel by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. It is the sequel to the novel The Gathering Storm, and the 13th book in the Wheel of Time series. The novel is the second part of A Memory of Light, Robert Jordan's projected final book. Because of the amount of material to cover, it was agreed by Jordan's wife, Tor Books and Brandon Sanderson to break the final book into three separate books. All three books are written by Sanderson with the aid of extensive notes left by the late Jordan. The title Towers of Midnight was proposed by Sanderson, replacing the working title of A Memory of Light: Shifting Winds. It was released on November 2, 2010 and is 328,000 words long. The book debuted at #1 on The New York Times Best Seller list.

It certainly is impressive to witness Sanderson work on the various aspects of the tale

Sanderson continues along the same vein that he has started in the previous book: concentratedly tying off loose ends and getting everyone where they need to be, while still taking the time to let the characters find their own reasons for their actions, as well as new connections between them.

It certainly is impressive to witness him work on the various aspects of the tale, taking it seriously where necessary, and driving it forward where that drive had been missing. I still can't shake the feeling that Jordan would have needed another ten volumes to get where Sanderson is after two, and while an epic must be long and detailed, the 8000 pages Jordan has taken for his part of the journey have hurt more than helped the overall story at this point.

While in the beginning of Sanderson's part, it sometimes felt as if he didn't have enough knowledge …

Nothing is more annoying than 3 chapters in a row of various characters doing their best Jon Snow "I do not want it" impressions. So over it, just accept your destiny that you're clearly skilled at and made for and eventually going to do anyway you idiots! Luckily that part short lived and things keep moving along nicely.

Perrin was the star of the show, finally getting back to being fun. Matrim continues his brutal suffering at the hands of Sanderson with a couple of multiple book plotlines tied off in a weirdly short time.

As far as I can see without having done book 14, this book also has one of the most unnecessary "you thought they died but they're actually alive" plot threads I've ever seen in my life.

From now on, he would carry the hammer of a king.

This book was incredible, I didn't want to put it down and not being able to read it for three weeks in October was torture. The story moves along at a blazing pace with plot development and action left and right. The last few books have been so amazing that I can almost forgive the slow pace that some of the later books had. I'm sad to be so close to the end of this series, but bring on the Last Battle!

It was over way too fast. And what's with the 4 month difference between hardcover and kindle publishing -.- Anyway I enjoyed this one as well. We're nearing the end and I finally started enjoying the Perrin chapters. It just took about 13 books to manage that. I like the new Rand.

It's been such a long time thought that I kept having to look up characters "Who was that again." So I am glad that in some cases Sanderson reminded me of previous developments.

I am missing Tuon ... hopefully she'll have more chapters in the next book.

Looking forward to the finale very much now. Maybe I'll even re-read everything sometime soon.

Sanderson does a really good job of keeping true to Jordan's characters, and Jordan himself seems to have done a sort of reversion to the pacing and storytelling of the early Wheel of Time books. The result is a 900+ page book that feels a lot shorter than that. I'm really starting to look forward to Mat's fighting in the Last Battle alongside Rand and Perrin. The series really feels like it's coming to a close in the first two volumes of A Memory of Light.

Slightly less good in my opinion than [b:The Gathering Storm|9621759|Rising Above the Gathering Storm, Revisited Rapidly Approaching Category 5|Rising Above the Gathering Storm Committee|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347452352s/9621759.jpg|14509017]; the end approaches, all signs point to it, but it felt lighter than the previous one in terms of plot advancing. I still enjoyed it a lot.
