I'm not sure it was a good idea to start with this book for the Sandman series, as it definitely felt I had not much context at all. The artwork was pretty amazing, so production value pushes up the rating. I can appreciate how long this book has been in the making for Gaiman, and I look forward to reading more of the Sandman stories themselves, rather than how he nearly undid the universe and then managed to dream it into existence again.

Let's start with the good: The art. Probably the best art of all of the Sandman series. The writing. Some parts are Neil Gaiman at his best.

The not-so-good: I was quite disappointed by the ending. It's way too abrupt. It feels like one episode or two are missing. In the many notes written by the different people involved in the making of the book (that can be found at the end of the book), Gaiman mentioned that he had to trim some ideas in order to fit the story into six episodes, and unfortunately, you can feel it. The end of episode 5 almost feels like the midway point of the story, even halfway through episode six, it feels far from being over. Then, a couple of pages later, everything is solved and resolved, somehow.

A terrifically good read, with artwork to match, but as I hadn’t read any sandman for 25 years, I felt like it took the reader for granted as someone who knew many of the characters inside out and left me wishing for more depth on the supporting cast. Aside from one character of course - I also want a cat that can convince me that it’s me.

Wow, this is trippy even by Sandman standards! I wonder why it took me so long to finally get around to reading it. A beautiful story, told in even more beautiful art.

One of the prettiest Sandman comics, and that's saying something. Don't pick this up as your first Sandman book, despite the title. The depth of the story depends on your familiarity with subsequent events. WITH those references under your belt, this is a deep and resonant prequel; without, the story feels a little light.
