The Blinding Knife is a 2012 epic fantasy novel by New York Times Bestselling author Brent Weeks and the second book in his Lightbringer series following The Black Prism. The novel is written in the third person perspective of several characters and follows protagonist Kip Guile as he discovers his latent magical powers. An Illuminating Follow Up

The Blinding Knife is the kind of sequel you want in a great series: it takes the foundational elements laid in the first novel and delivers more of what you loved while expanding the world. The politics are appropriately convoluted, our knowledge of drafting appears to be the tip of the magical iceberg, and the religious/historical treatment of wights becomes so morally ambigious that it upends everything you thought you knew. It's also an exceptionally tense novel. The story is long and you end up growing quite attached to the leads, but a sense of dread is pervasive throughout because you know at any moment, things will go terribly wrong. Brent Weeks spends most his storyline torturing his characters and it's rare that anything goes well for them.

That said, this novel isn't so much about Gavin Guile as it is about Kip. The teenager gets the kind of growth …

In this life, we are not garments which may be washed and worn again...we are candles, giving light and heat until we are consumed. You burned brightly than most. It has a cost.

The middle book of the trilogy took a step back and went to school with Kip, and it benefited from it. Learning about the Colors at Chromeria through Kips training really helped solidify what drafters can do, what their 'rules' are and how someone like the Color Prince can gain power. Going in to the process of Blackguard training was excellent as well. This would have been a great way to start the series, but Weeks almost showed what was possible in the first book and then went back and explained the details in this story.

I enjoyed this book better on every level from the first instalment. Landing in Chromeria really helped the story in every …

This was a fun and enjoyable read. I'll certainly continue the series and try to catch up to where it's at currently. The plot, setting, and characters were all pretty good. I'm probably most excited about the setting since Weeks has developed a very interesting magic system based on light and there are plenty of hints at more beyond what we learned in the first two books.

Review of 'The blinding knife' on 'Goodreads'

The main part of this book was a lot more interesting than Book 1 (except for the part where apparently everyone is obsessed with some sort of knockoff Pokémon card game).

The story started to fall apart in the end, though. Lots of fast paced stuff going on, but the story kept rewinding to tell us about the same event from someone else's point of view. So, what should have been pretty cool lost all of its momentum.

I listened to the audiobook, and the second books was much better than the first. Weeks goes into much greater detail about the characters and the world, and it shows some really strong world building chops. Diving right into the third book.
