Two misfits. One extraordinary love.

...Red hair, wrong clothes. Standing behind him until he turns his head. Lying beside him until he wakes up. Making everyone else seem drabber and flatter and never good enough... Eleanor.

...He knows she'll love a song before he plays it for her. He laughs at her jokes before she ever gets to the punch line. There's a place on his chest, just below his throat, that makes her want to keep promises... Park.

Set over the course of one school year, this is the story of two star-crossed sixteen-year-olds -- smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try.

Review of 'Eleanor & Park' on 'Goodreads'

I read this after reading 'Fangirl' on a recommendation in Maria Sachiko Cecire's 'Re-enchanted.' I enjoyed the dialogues in 'Fangirl', finding them sharp and witty, so I thought I'd give this a go. It's kind of OK, I suppose, for the young readership it's intended for, but there are issues.

There has been a collective recognition that YA literature - indeed, literature in general - has excluded some voices. Heroes and heroines have been white, middle-class, cis and pretty. In 'Eleanor and Park' Rowell seems to have set out to confront this criticism. Her heroine is fat, freckled and red-headed. Her hero is half-Korean. Eleanor's two best friends are black. The author is obviously trying to write a book that is inclusive.

This doesn't quite come off. As nearly all the characters in the book are close to stereotype - I'm not criticising here ... without stereotype, there is very …

I have heard SO much about this book. And it was fine -- definitely everything promised: a sweet romance between two non-conventional leads, which brought diversity to the world of YA realistic romance. But the biggest problem I always have with Rowell books is the romance -- it's too sappy, too sudden, too forced -- and this book is mostly romance. (Also, Eleanor's abusive family, which is very sad and a little over the top.) So, a good book, but not for me.

Eh, I'm too old for this kind of book. Truthfully, I have no idea why I even read it. It was okay. When I was 12 I probably would have been like OMG!!! Best book evar!!! Alas, I am not 12. I didn't especially believe in these characters, didn't believe they would start a relationship, didn't believe in the retarded step dad, didn't believe ANY of it. But that's because this book it written for young adults who have a different set of life experiences than that of this old lady. Lol.

So yeah, it was overwrought and unrealistic but that's okay. That's how teenagers are. Read it if you must.

This was a wonderful book but I can't give it 5 stars because of the first page of the novel. Starting the book at the ending completely short-circuited the dramatic and emotional arc of the novel. That's really a shame because the arc and the interaction of the narrators worked so well. In thinking further about it, the first page also closes down the hope and possible directions the characters could take beyond the end of the novel left by the ambiguous ending.

It quite changed the way I read this. Instead of rushing through it and enjoying it, I could only read a little at a time, knowing it was going to end badly, enjoying the good parts but not wanting to get to the end.

Review of 'Eleanor & Park' on 'Storygraph'

More like 2.75, but I'm rounding up. This was mostly a case of me realizing I wasn't the intended audience for the book. I set it down for probably 3 months out of pure boredom, but the end redeemed it a little. The characters' plights were not interesting to me, though I appreciated the overall lack of melodrama (or at least it was better written melodrama?). Overall, I'm not a fan of this author. Oh well. At least I can say that now.

I am just really sorry to say that I did not like this book. I seem to be one of the few who did not like it, and I am still sad about that.

My main issue was that I couldn't relate at all with the characters. I couldn't read this book without thinking I was reading about 12yo kids. Apparently they are 16yo in the book, but if you are only holding hands, sitting next to each other on the bus reading some comics and barely talking to each other... you can't blame me for thinking they were 12yo, right? When I was 16, I did other things when I was in love. Just saying.

And second: I did not understand what they saw in each other. I didn't like Eleanor. I thought she was frustrating and boring. For a love story, there wasn't enough love for me. I'm …

I'm a tough sell when it comes to YA books. Most of them are too obvious for me to enjoy, either as dystopian hellholes or glossy music videos. But when a friend recommended "Eleanor and Park" to me, I was ready for either hellhole or music video, as long as it was a fast read for a chilly autumn evening.

What I read was a savvy paean to young love between two misfits amidst the myriad land-mines that dot adolescence. Darker issues also lurk in the background of one of our protagonists, but these are written so gracefully that they don't feel like plot devices. (Trigger warnings apply, however; this is not a Hallmark card.)

The most remarkable thing about this remarkable book is that the two protagonists are completely believable human beings that aren't forced to change what makes them unique in order to find acceptance, to find happiness. …

I'm so glad I chose this as my first Rainbow Rowell book! This story is so wonderfully written, it really did remind me what it was like to be young and in love. I loved her pop culture references, smart quips, and witty writing style. In spite of dealing with some deep issues it was refreshing and light hearted when it needed to be. Loved it.

Commute audiobook. Not thrilled with either narrator.

I spent the first half of this book rolling my eyes and the second half reluctantly interested. It's a YA romance about first love and it is exactly as melodramatic as you would expect. I think if I were 15 I would have thought this was the Best Book Ever because it's not just ANY first love, it's DEEP, mom and dad, because it's about misfits who like music beyond the Top 40 and one of them is a fat girl. From my current life (ie well beyond adolescence) it's hard to take seriously. At one point Park leans against the wall by Eleanor's locker and I was reminded of Angela Chase being thrilled by Jordan Catalano's great leaning. I have to give this book a little bit of a break because I remember how much I loved My So-Called Life; to this …

Wow! This book is hard to rate and review. It really brought me back to 1986. Granted, I would be younger than E & P, but still. I could see it played out in my neighborhood, in my mind. I was prepared to not feel for this and not let it change me. I couldn't help it I was sucked in.

Great writing! Some very hard issues here. To try to say "I would change this or that" would change how it made you feel. At one point Park says the way that Eleanor dressed was art. Well that is what Rainbow Rowell did here. She created art. It's undeniable. Depending on your taste you may or may not like it.

I would have given it five stars if it made me feel happier throughout instead of stressed and heart-wrenched.

Are four stars even too much? I'm not sure if I liked the book that much. Ok, I had high expectations because everyone in the internet seems to love that story. After I liked "Fangirl" I thought I would give Eleanor and Park a try. But it was very different from what I expected. The love story was not deep, at least what I felt. Eleanor was always on distance. Also as a reader I couldn't get close to her. But well, actually I think that this book is not about the love (?) story between Eleanor and Park, it is more about Eleanor's family which is a mess. And I'm not sure what I think about the end of the book. A bit more details would have been nice. To me, it feels like a chapter is missing, or at least a song title.

I loved this book.

It actually reminds me a lot of Looking for Alaska.. but better.. and darker...

For a book written in 2012, its very odd to have a book written about 1986. At the same time, there is absolutely no way any of this story could be told in an sort of modern setting.

When I started the book last night, I almost skipped over it. I wasn't really in the mood for a love story. I'm so glad I didn't. It was an emotional rollar coaster, and was exactly what I needed.

Not to spoil anything, but I absolutely adore books and movies that leave the ending up to your own interpretation. Its explicit and vague at the same time. I really don't know how to explain it other than I've already come up with a couple possibilities of what the sentence could me. Its awesome.
