This makes me mad it was the only view we got of Laconia in the show, first of all.
Second of all, this short is completely brilliant, and I suspect even would be out-of-context. I feel like if someone had never read the Expanse, I could hand them this story to get a taste of it.
This one is different from the other short stories. The others answered questions, filled in blanks, and gave more information about the world. This one give something new.
And at the end, I was left with many questions and an intense longing for more.
Spoilers ahead. . . . . Even though I knew that this was going to be "Pet Cemetary In Space" from the second he said "Xan would die the next day", I still stayed gripped to my chair. Perfect amount of mystery, weirdness, and wonderful mixed together.
Fantastic Novella in the Expanse series.

Well that was very strange. I hope it doesn't take the series too much into a fantasy direction. I guess we won't find out what this means until book 9...

Taking place in the same time sequence of late #6 this book was short and profoundly unsettling. We get a glimpse at life on Laconia. The gate that Duarte has taken for himself and his people. From the viewpoint of one of the geological survey crews daughter. What transpires is quite odd and disconcerting. Orbital platforms from our alien progenitors have been activated. A strange set of creatures, biological(?), technological(?), show up and what they do.. is pretty weird.
The book leaves us with a WTF moment. We have no idea what is about to happen, how it will unfold, what the deeper ramifications will be. It is just disconcerting and left hanging. Painfully.
I hope we'll get a revisit to this, or a little further down the timeline because DAMN, humans don't like to have their curiosity peaked and then unanswered!
