Are we done yet?

I honestly hadn't remembered just HOW much of a drag Jordan's books are at times. Or is it the disconnect between reading novels that were released with years between them back to back that makes it so glaring? I couldn't say.

For this one, here's my take-away: What even is this "Knife of Dreams"? Having just finished the book, I most certainly couldn't tell you. Unlike some of the other books in the serious, dreams and the Dreamworld don't seem to play any mayor role, and I don't recall any knife of significance being mentioned.

Don't get me wrong. Jordan can really write well, and his epic, EPIC story has soooo much good in it. But, and I know this get's repetitive, stricter editing, cutting down to 12, or 10 books, and it would still be one of the greatest works of fantasy literature - but half as hard to …

This was a weird one. If I’d stopped reading halfway through, I would have given this one star. About midway, though, it suddenly picked up and became a page turner.

The usual cast of characters is here, more or less: Mat and Perrin (and Faile) seem largely wasted, as their chapters consist of page after page after page of strategizing. Nynave and Lan barely appear in this book, which isn’t such a bad thing. Neither do Min or Aviendha, which is. Thom is likewise sidelined, serving largely as a supporting character to Mat.

Elayne has a substantial number of pages devoted to her plight, but for the most part absolutely nothing happens. When something did finally happen, I’m afraid I rolled my eyes in disbelief. Also, I’m reasonably sure that pregnant women aren’t filled with rage every minute of every day but, having never been pregnant, …

Kinda sad to finish this one, because while I still have three more to go before I find out how this friggin' series ends, this is the last one Robert Jordan wrote himself. This is his last book, however much of his notes Sanderson might've used for the remaining three. The story continues, but Robert Jordan is done. :(

He had accepted what he needed to be. Why was he so bothered by it, then? A voice deep down—one not in his head, but in his heart—had begun to disagree with what he did.~Rand al’Thor

Lo and behold, Rand al’Thor has finally woken up and realized that his hardness wasn’t the answer in how to fight against and defeat the shadow. Rand has needed to snap out of this self imposed hardness, he has needed to allow himself to feel emotions because what is life if we are unable to feel? Rand was left believing “Anything that made him think of living through the Last Battle, anything that made him hope, was dangerous. He had to be hard enough to accept what was …

"Well, heroes got patted on the head and pushed out of the way until the next time a hero was needed, if they survived being a hero in the first place. Very often heroes did not."~Matrim Cauthon, The Prince of the Ravens, General of the Band of the Red Hand

To readers of The Wheel of Time Series, the moment you complete Knife of Dreams will fill you with very conflicting emotions for two reasons. First, this book is the final book before the last trilogy and the ending of the series – A Memory of Light actually encompasses the next three books titled The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, and the final book A Memory of Light. Secondly, Knife of …

People never really changed, yet the world did, with disturbing regularity. You just had to live with it, or at least live through it. Now and then, with luck, you could affect the direction of the changes, but even if you stopped one, you only set another in motion.~Cadsuane Melaidhrin, Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah

Crossroads of Twilight did not live up to my expectations of what makes for a successful series sequel at all, perhaps part of the blame for that could be placed on the events at the end of Winter’s Heart. The events at the end of Winter’s Heart provide a lot of set up towards future events because the cleansing of saidin removes some of the danger surrounding the Asha’man …

Some people thought scars a sign of toughness. It seemed to Perrin that fewer scars meant that you knew what you were doing.

After a few books that were slow and tedious this one storms out of the gate and is an incredible read. I don't know if Book 11 is great merely because it's a good story, or that is follows months of boring reading, but this was a top notch book and I'm glad that the gas pedal is being pressed on the story.

Toward the end as the number of story arcs and number of characters start to balloon, the books kind of lose the pacing that made the early books such a joy to read.

That being said, I absolutely love the resolution that Jordan starts toward in Knife of Dreams, you can feel the finality starting to bubble under the surface, and I can most definitely see how Jordan viewed this as the second to last book of the series.

A Memory of Light's release in January is definitely going to be a bittersweet moment for fantasy lit.
