Whimsical and Melancholy

Content warning One spoiler, but not if you remember the movie

Review of 'The Last Unicorn' on 'Goodreads'

I am horrified that I have never read this before. I can't imagine how many years of being able to re-read this I have missed.

I really, really loved it.

It is playful and dark and lyrical and melancholy. It ended just right and yet I wanted to know more. I considered flipping it over and starting it again, which I haven't done with a book since my beloved Watership Down.

I have seen the movie, but, as always, the book is significantly better. I'll be picking up a physical copy, which I don't really do much of anymore, just so I can make sure to have it on my shelf.

I've long considered Peter S. Beagle one of my favorite authors, based on my unreserved delight with "The Innkeeper's Song", "We Never Talk About My Brother", and "Tamsin". Yet despite my years of loving his work, I've somehow never actually read his most famous work until now.

I wish I hadn't waited, because this was GREAT.

This was easily the prettiest book I've read in a long time, and I spent a lot longer selecting that adjective than I'd planned to, because I don't want to suggest that The Last Unicorn was somehow light or fluffy...except it was also those things. Beagle's work often feels dreamlike and ephemeral at first, but gains weight and reality the longer I'm away from it. I finished The Last Unicorn two days ago, and my appreciation for it keeps growing. This was really, really good.

If I'd realised I was that close to the end, I might have finished it soon.

Magical and unlike any other book I have ever read.

I remember seeing the movie with the unicorns in the waves; it was one of my favorites. The book has the same atmosphere.

To properly notice all the details I would probably have to read it again and I only saw the animated film once when I was already an adult and even that is years back so the story was new to me ....

I wouldn't have read it, if the humble bundle had not included it and now I am glad I did. A beautiful story and lovely characters. I just love Molly.

Also in the edition I have there is a great interview with the author and his editor! Must-read that!

Wow! An amazing read. The words and the language that Beagle uses just comes to life and paints pictures on the page. Other than the Red Bull and Momma Fortuna's death early on, this is a great book for both children and adults.

I saw the Rankin/Bass cartoon ages ago. And while my sister's watched it endlessly, I don't remember too much about it. I do know that Peter Beagle wrote the screenplay for it and I do remember it being mostly faithful to the book, except (and this caught me by surprise) Schmendrick the Magician seems much more like a jerk in the book, instead of an aloof, clumsy magician.

A must-read for everyone.

One of my perennial favorites. It's wrapped in the clichés and archetypes of fairy tales, but it's much more than it seems. It's about transformation, about love, about the way happiness can make you sad and getting what you want can be bittersweet. It's about becoming who you are, and what you might lose when you do. It's about mortality and our yearning for the timeless. It's a story about stories and how real life doesn't work that way, except when it does. I never tire of it, and every time I read it, it is different.

I remember this as a movie, along with The NeverEnding Story, watching at my cousin's house when I was very little. They were two of my favorites. I'm so glad I was able to get this book to read the story. I remember several scenes from it as a child. I thought the ending was perfect, that she returned to being a Unicorn, and all the Unicorns were freed. As an adult, I understand the tragedy involved in the love story that I missed as a child.
