maybe it's because I'm reading this in 2025, maybe it's because several of the Watch books are already about racism, but this one definitely trod some old ground for me. the whole arc of the Watch books are about expanding Ankh-Morpork's idea of who is included as a Person, so the theme fit better here, but it did feel a little reheated. this one was darker and kind of grittier in some places, which I guess I didn't mind, but a fair whack of it was talking about marriage in a very Boomer/"are the straights okay?" kind of way, which got old quick, although the trademark Pratchett humor kept the book from dragging. the riverboat chase scene was a highlight, as was Vimes v Vetinari at the end, and Willikins really made his presence known, but I guess in the end, I felt like this book was a better written …

If anything I enjoyed it more this time round, although as in many of Terry's works there are bits that seem rushed and give me the feeling he had more to say but maybe was worried that it would make the book too long.

Anyway, it was chilling to read the racism in the light of what is going on today in Britain with Brexit and in the US with Trump. The same phrases, the same casual attitude to a 'lesser' race that the majority just don't understand.

In a way having the goblins have such amazing talents (the idea of the noble savage?) didn't really add to the story as it made you feel that we should like them not because they were thinking beings but because they were talented artists...

The book does feel disjointed at times but it still manages to make you laugh and cry on …

This one is about Goblins, whether they are recognised as people or vermin, about slave labour. About parenthood, humanity and solidarity.
Among the darkest ones I have read yet in Discworld, but beautiful and intriguing.
Definitely enjoyed it!

Having been thoroughly enjoying Pratchett's Tiffany Aching series, this is my first return to Captain Vimes since "Guards, Guards!" As opposed to the kindness and personal empathy that characterize Tiffany stories, this one featured Vimes for a more adult-oriented crime story concerning domestic life and the importance of justice. While not particularly innovative or brandishing any uncommon profundity, it was Pratchett in healthy form, exhibiting his wit and cleverness while exemplifying page-turning fun and fun characters.

There should be a word for the feeling you experience when you finish an excellent Discworld novel you had never read before, knowing that you can never read it again for the first time, feeling deeply grateful and moved by it, grateful that you've read it, while being in awe of Sir Pterry's storystelling, world, and characters, and realizing once more what a void he left behind. 4.5 this is my first Terry Pratchett book. I have tried others but never get past the First chapters I will have to go back and try again.
Ok I love Diskworld I have read all and can't wait for 40.

I dunno, it was just kind of vague and meandering and lacking in the ... oomph that is a defining quality of the really good Discworld books. Felt like a rehash of some of the previous stories that didn't really add anything new.

This book substantiates the theory that all the really excellent Discworld books have Death in them.
