Heartstopper Volume One

I am a gay man in my 40s who grew up as a child and teenager in a small Conservative town. Growing up in that toxic environment as a gay boy was very difficult. You couldn't come out for the risk of rejection and violence from multiple sources.

Although I kind of knew I was gay at a very young age, it was made absolutely clear when I developed a mad crush on a boy in High School. That didn't develop into anything. He was straight, of course.

I wanted to watch the Netflix series, but not before I read the original source material. I love these feel-good coming of age (and coming out) LGBTQ love stories because I think back to that crush and wish I was able to experience that when I was a boy. To just... be. I lost so much of my life because I couldn't do that.

It is nice to see that the current young generations are in a much more accepting society of fluid sexualities and genders. That's not to say that it's not bad in a lot of areas, but it is drastically better than when I was a boy.

This graphic novel perfectly captures that young love.

Heartstopper est d’abord un webcomic, une série de comics, publié sur Internet depuis 2016 et que l’on doit à la britannique Alice Oseman. Un premier volume a été compilé à partir des premiers chapitres, ce qui donne tout de même un album de près de 300 pages, publié début février 2019.

Charlie and Nick are at the same school, but they’ve never met … until one day when they’re made to sit together. They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick, even though he doesn’t think he has a chance.

But love works in surprising ways, and Nick is more interested in Charlie than either of them realised.

Heartstopper is about love, friendship, loyalty and mental illness. It encompasses all the small stories of Nick and Charlie’s lives that together make up something larger, which speaks to all of us.

On est un peu, voire beaucoup, dans le même esprit que pour Bloom que j’ai lu juste avant et dont je parlais justement hier : le récit est centré sur la rencontre et la relation naissante – amicale ou amoureuse – entre deux garçons adolescents (anglais ici, alors que l’action se déroulait aux Etats-Unis dans Bloom)

La construction est classique, notamment sur la définition des deux personnages principaux : Charlie est un garçon plutôt timide, peu intéressé par le sport, connu comme gay et qui est d’ailleurs embarqué dans une relation secrète avec un de ses camarades ; Nick est un sportif populaire qui traine avec un groupe d’amis qui a plutôt tendance à se moquer de Charlie.

Derrière ces stéréotypes et ce point de départ classique, on trouve tout de même un récit sympathique servi par des dessins simples mais efficaces et surtout totalement en phase avec le ton du récit. J’ai souri plusieurs fois en lisant cette jolie histoire d’amitié et peut-être d’amour. Les sentiments naissants de Charlie pour Nick sont craquants, et le trouble ressenti par Nick qui s’interroge sur sa sexualité est décrit avec beaucoup de justesse.

J’ai passé un très bon moment de lecture avec cet album vraiment sympathique. Je n’ai pas été surpris par le récit, mais ça m’a bien plu et c’est bien l’essentiel. Le deuxième volume est annoncé pour le mois de juillet et je dois dire que je suis plutôt impatient de découvrir la suite des aventures de Charlie et Nick, d’autant que le premier s’achève sur un cliffhanger qui appelle forcément une suite.
