This novel had an interesting premise and a great deal of promise, and while it was an enjoyable read, it didn’t quite hit all the spots for me. The characters, plot, and writing style were ultimately all just average, and while altogether they tell a good story, it wasn’t something that struck me as particularly clever. The references to the Gothic literary tradition are no doubt meaningful and interesting, but not being well-read in that area, they didn’t mean too much to me. Still, the plot was engaging and the story easy and fun to read, even though I would have liked to see more in terms of character development and the historical fiction element.

What struck me as odd was that, despite being the catalyst for the premise of the story, Catalina Taboada is largely irrelevant to the story—for much of it, she isn’t even involved directly. If I …

An atmospheric horror story that was so slow burn that I was beginning to drift away, despite its intriguing subtexts about domination, colonization, and generational trauma - but then the story changed lanes at breakneck speed and I was hooked again. Smart, creepy, sensual, and unique in a way that defies all expectations.

This one was fun. The protagonist Noemí is certainly not perfect, but very likeable and believable. The story itself is dark, and I really wasn't certain how it'd turn out in the end.

Having read two of Moreno-Garcia's books, I'm struck but how important color seems to be. Perhaps I'm imagining it, but colors representing certain things seems to be a common theme.

It took me a long time to finish this book. I almost didn't. I had to stop multiple times and tell my self "Just give it time. Don't be so harsh with it, it may be a very good story". My problem with the book is the setting and the time were it's suppose to happen. México, 1950's... A time and place where high society women did not get sent unchaperoned hundreds of miles away from their homes by their fathers, to places they don't even know. And that was just the first of the jarring anachronistic bits that wouldn't let me suspend my disbelief. And from there, it just went down the hill. Let's just say that for me, a book called "Mexican gothic" set in México in the middle of the 20th century and written by a Mexican, had to be a little more Mexican than it is. …

Man, I don't know. I just didn't like it. Looking at it as a piece of literature outside of genre, the characters were boring and had poor development. The story wasn't very captivating and was poorly paced. The romance felt forced and unnatural. However my primary disappointment was that, as a horror novel, it was appallingly not scary, horrific, or tense. Every beat felt so formulaic and predictable that I never felt the intensity or urgency of the story. I felt bored throughout the whole story, and at the end I felt just ambivalent about the characters as I did in the beginning. I'm no horror connoisseur because I'm pretty easily scared. But this was a miss all around.

Difficult start. Difficult everything, actually: horrible nasty characters, the kind you just wish would throw themselves repeatedly off a tall parapet onto jagged rocks. Even the heroine—a vain, shallow teenager—was uninteresting, so I had noone to care about. (She does grow up some, but even in the end she remains forgettable.) The beautyist undertones irked me: ugly nerd vs handsome bad-boy is such a tired trope. The story itself is melodramatic almost to the point of being campy, but I can see it being fun in a bubblegum-pageturny way. And perhaps cranky old males aren’t the book’s target audience anyway, so I’ll shut up now.

Meh. I'm not sure why this book received so much hype. Maybe if I'd read it in October to get myself hyped for Halloween I would've liked it more? It had elements of Dracula, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Little Stranger – creepy old house with a weird family that definitely has something evil going on. But it also wasn't super compelling and bordered on bodice-ripper turf. I listened to it from the library so I was able to speed it up, but even then I found myself waiting for it to be over.

I'll be honest, that was not the ending I expected. I really liked this book. I liked the gradual procession from subtle spookiness to outright horror. It gets pretty gruesome in places and very uncomfortable in others and it 100% did its job in giving me the wiggins. I'll not look so kindly at mushrooms for a while, I think.

Mexican Gothic is slow burn horror built on gaslighting, sexism, and a fantastic sense of aesthetic.

If that sounds great then you’ll definitely love the first half of this book. How you feel about the second half will probably depend on how you feel about the cause of some of the paranormal horror elements once it becomes more prominent in the story. I happen to be someone who is fascinated by this particular thing and so I switched from being moderately creeped out to being very excited overall (still creeped out by individual scenes). The second half felt much faster-paced than the first, but that might just be because I got way more into the story at that point. My best guess for how it’ll feel for someone who was creeped out to start and then has any fear related to the eventual reveal is that it’ll ramp up the …

Not really my jam. I think I could have liked it as a short story, especially if the main character were more... likeable?.... interesting?....smart?... I mean come on. Who would stay in that house past day one? Her dad could have sent a friggin cavalry, but she was too worried about losing and not going to grad school? I can't.
