CloneKnight reviewed Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe (Book of the New Sun (1))

When I first heard of The Book of the New Sun, it was described as a fantasy-epic on par with The Lord of the Rings. Intriguing, so I immediately bought a bundle of the first two books in this unfamiliar saga. Not with particularly high expectations, but some hope for sure.
Unfortunately I was kind of let down. Shadow of the Torturer, while having an intriguing set-up for its world and story, failed to capture my imagination. A lot of time is spent on the guild that Severian (the protagonist) is a part of, and I'd say that aspect was my favourite. There are more wondrous elements (especially in the garden and what that builds up to) that don't get much explanation but do make the world feel more alive which was enjoyable.
