It's like a 3.5 but has a stellar night vibe. I would recommend it!

This is such a beautiful, short novella. I went into it with no expectations, and I'm glad I didn't.
The whole story takes place over the course of seven hours, from midnight to 7 am, and follows a small cast of characters over the course of the night. The experiences that most of the characters had reflect a strong sense of community and care that I remember coming across late at night while I was in university. Of course, there are bleak moments here, but the weight of them are kept at bay by the humanism of the characters.
The story does have surreal moments, but they don't predominate, and they add a lot to the story. Late at night, things don't always feel right, and the surreal really feeds into that.

One component of the story that does a lot of work is the point of view. For one, the narrator and the point of view have nearly anthropomorphic characteristics. At the same time, the whole story is told in the present tense. The narrator learns about occurrences at the same time we do, and it offers a sort of meta-commentary. In some ways, it reads almost more like a screen play than a novel. The PoV's voice adds to the sense of strangeness and wonder.
My only regret was that the book is so short--but I also think it was as long as it has to be.
Erinäisin tavoin hieman erilainen Murakamin romaani. Ensinnäkin tämä on lyhyt, sopii hyvin luettavaksi yhdellä istumalla esimerkiksi yhden yön kuluessa, mikä onkin sopivaa, sillä kirjan tapahtumatkin sijoittuvat yhteen yöhön Tokiossa. Toisekseen päähenkilö ei ole itseään etsivä varhaiskeski-ikäinen jannu, joka löytää menneisyydestään jotain mystistä, vaan kaksi eri syistä kaupungilla yötä valvovaa nuorta kohtaa toisensa sattumalta ja toinen tuppautuu toisen seuraan. Kolmanneksi kertojaratkaisu on erikoinen, joskin tämä sinne tänne zuumaileva me-kertoja on kirjan ontuvimpia elementtejä. Mutta hiukan vinksahtanut ja mystinen tunnelma on silti kohdallaan, kuten Murakamin romaanilta sopii odottaakin.
A lovely book with nice stories. I'm thinking, anybody should read one Murakami - book in the life. But better two

An interesting little surreal slice-of-life story.
I'm a big fan of Mr Murakami and this one has his style; a very visual and quick read, at times coming off more like a treatment for a film complete with camera movements and audience reaction. A handful of interesting characters sharing the stage as their nighttime lives intersect ... my only real complaint is that some (all?) of the character arcs seem to be left to the reader to interpret. Obviously, this could be the whole point -- that people are like ships passing in the night, and we rarely ever find out what happens to the random strangers we come across -- but it's a minor pet peeve of mine when there's so much character development with little true pay off.
That said, I'd still recommend it. Perfect for an airplane ride or passing time during a graveyard shift or otherwise …

Not the best Murakami I've read. Well written as always but the plot and story were not my cup of tea. Not well rounded in my opinion,I prefer a story with a les open end.

A short one - I read it in one sitting. Dark and strange and I am not sure I totally understand it. I was going to say it's strange, even for Murakami, but it might just be differently strange. I think I liked it, but I also think I need to read it again to be sure.

Short read. Decent.
Almost as good as Kafka on the Shore, but oh goood I love it. The atmosphere defined my own writing and this book in particular inspired me in so many ways. Best "love" story I ever read.

First book of Murakami's that I have read. I like his terse, cinematic style. But this book didn't seem complete to me; Murakami hints at possibilities and darker, deeper threads of narrative, but eventually pulls back for a kind of storybook ending. I enjoyed his characters dialogues, however.
