Singularity Sky is a science fiction novel by author Charles Stross, published in 2003. It was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2004. A sequel, Iron Sunrise, was published that same year. Together the two are referred to as the Eschaton novels, after a near-godlike intelligence that exists in both. The novel follows the ill-fated military campaign by a repressive state, the New Republic, to retaliate for a perceived invasion of one of its colony worlds. In actuality, the planet has been visited by the Festival, a technologically advanced alien or posthuman race that rewards its hosts for "entertaining" them by granting whatever the entertainer wishes, including the Festival's own technology. Review of "Singularity Sky" by Charles Stross

A readable mix of familiar Sci Fi and Adventure elements that are done better elsewhere. The set-up is compelling and there are some well-conceived and executed story lines, but the most "alien" part of story didn't come together for me: It didn't mesh well with the other story-lines and made things drag a bit at the end. I wasn't initially interested in reading more, but now a few months later, and seeing that this is an early work from the author, I might take a chance on the sequel.

Great, but not perfect

So, mostly a fun SciFi story, with callbacks to late 19th and early 20th century naval and general history.

The things that cost it a star for me are an number of smaller annoyances. The bits with the old admiral i didn’t like. There was generally too much going on, with the different factions attached to the festival. The romance subplot felt stitched on and could have been dropped.

Review of 'Singularity Sky' on 'Goodreads'

I just couldn't really get into this book, which probably explains why I needed almost a year to finish it. It's got a very interesting premise and a very interesting universe, but I found the plot rather lacking. It just all seemed a bit too random for me and it took the entire book to recognize a connection.
