The adventures of four amiable animals, Rat, Toad, Mole and Badger, along a river in the English countryside.

I found it boring.

I honestly hate the writing, and I fail to see how it has been one of these "must-read" classics. It droned on and on when it could've said something in a few words, making it more tiresome than it should have been. It could've had an interesting story somewhere, but it was buried so far beneath excessive description, I stopped caring to even try and find it.

Review of 'The Wind in the Willows' on 'Goodreads'

I've read a few of these "Classic" children's book in the last couple of years and in my opinion this one has been the best. The descriptions are beautiful, the characters are well known and the plot/adventures were a joy to read. The setting is one of the best, the river bank, not too far from where I live, I've spent a few times drifting in a boat like Ratty. I would rate this 5 stars....Reading this to my daughter I would give it 3 stars (averaging into 4 stars). I don't think the book works well as something to read to young kids, there are very long passages describing scenery, I could see my daughter's attention starting to drift at times. There are a lot of big words in this book and she picked up on all of them, I had to get the dictionary out for a couple …

'The Wind in the Willows': Simply superlative

This is one of the most lovely, funny, and beautiful books that I have ever read. I've been reading and re-reading it since I was quite young, and it always leaves me wanting more. Mole, Rat, Badger, and especially the ingenious and inimitable Mr. Toad are a perfect fusion of temperaments, quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. An odd shifting of tone from one chapter to the next nonetheless works perfectly, a rare alchemy that would have (and often has) turned leaden in the hands of a lesser author.

But I won't be reviewing the book in great detail here. Instead, here's how Sebastian, my seven-year-old son, reacted to the story.

I have to admit that I was worried that the book might be too advanced for him. And at first, my fears seemed prophetic: the story didn't seem to interest him very much, and he often asked to read something …
