My main thought throughout this novel was "what the hell is going on?" Neuromancer is a little difficult to follow, but certainly is an important fulcrum of the cyberpunk genre. Sci-fi fans will find it rather captivating, but the layman can enjoy it as well.

Re-read this in 2022 after nearly 20 years. It felt less cool and more annoying this time. All the characters were trying to be so cool & badass that it was hard to follow what was going on. The first time I read this I felt like the characters were just reticent and mysterious. This go round they just felt thin.
Interesting how physical the conception of cyberspace is in this book. Case makes a big deal of how he's leaving meatspace behind, doesn't care about his body. But every metaphor of cyberspace is physical, 3d - the way it looks, the way you move through it. Our internet is much more disembodying than this cyberspace. Don't even need to "jack in" - just a few minutes scrolling on your phone and you've all but forgotten your body exists.

It's also deeply unclear why cyberspace even exists, what the point and function of it is, especially compared to the internet.
Also, for a world run by corporations, public transit is in remarkably good order.

Neuromancer is one of my favorite books, which I have read and reread over the past two decades.
I really like the cyberpunk genre of Science Fiction, with Neuromancer being one of the fathers or founders of “the movement” (I can't leave Mirrorshades aside, nor other seminal Gibson tales that are there in Burning Chrome…).
Neuromancer has it all. A lot of younger people don't like or even don't understand the vision we had of the future in the 1980s. The Matrix and Cyberspace were just some of our fantasies of the future. It is “curious” that nowadays any child has access to this universe on a tablet, accessing the Matrix while sitting on the sofa in the living room.
Gibson's writing is incredibly vivid. The way he play with words has, in my opinion, its apex in Johnny Mnemonic, earlier work, but Neuromancer also contains these characteristics.

I also like the characters and how they live in this nihilistic madness so characteristic of cyberpunk. Call me nostalgic, but that's the truth.
For Science Fiction lovers, Neuromancer is a must-read. Gibson reset those old sci-fi standards. Contrary to what many can say, cyberpunk remains very relevant and far from dead. Long live the Neuromancer.

I never got into this book. The characters didn't appeal to me, and I didn't care what they were doing. As such, I lost track of what was going on and didn't take the time to catch up. HOWEVER, it was obvious that Gibson has some real talent. He has an amazing ability to set a scene with the perfect mood thanks to an eye for detail. It wouldn't hurt to read it, and despite the low ranking by me, I plan to give Gibson another shot in the future.

The origin of the term 'Cyberspace'. Interesting but strange in a pleasing way. After reading this popular sci-fi novel, I am not dissappointed of course, but doubt that I'll be reading more of Gibson's works for a while...I found it tough to read.
