In the thousand-sun network of humanity's expansion, new colony worlds are struggling to find their way. Every new planet lives on a knife edge between collapse and wonder, and the crew of the aging gunship Rocinante have their hands more than full keeping the fragile peace.

In the vast space between Earth and Jupiter, the inner planets and belt have formed a tentative and uncertain alliance still haunted by a history of wars and prejudices. On the lost colony world of Laconia, a hidden enemy has a new vision for all of humanity and the power to enforce it.

New technologies clash with old as the history of human conflict returns to its ancient patterns of war and subjugation. But human nature is not the only enemy, and the forces being unleashed have their own price. A price that will change the shape of humanity -- and of the Rocinante …

This book isn’t bad, I just don’t care for the type of story being told. If my wife wasn’t also reading the series, then I might not have finished it. Still planning to try to finish the series.

I dislike stories about living under tyranny. I generally find them too depressing. I appreciated that this book more or less ended on a high note, but that didn't make slogging through the rest of the book less of a chore.

I also have to say that thanks to the TV show, I'm just a little surprised whenever Alex makes an appearance now.

This was a great book in the series. the start was a bit discombobulating for me, but once I got that I was on the right book, it was exactly what I wanted. And somehow, the characters came even more alive than they normally do in these books. Bobbie really shines in this one.

2021 Re-read
That seemed to be the human pattern - reach out to the unknown and then make it into the sort of thing you left in the first place.

It's been eighteen months but going back to the universe of The Expanse feels like a comfortable pair of slippers. I have zero regrets doing a mini re-read in advance of Book #9 and found myself fully engaged and interested in the story.

That astonishing moment in human history, passing through a stable wormhole into an alien-created network of interstellar gates, had just led to a whole bunch of people deciding to shoot each other.

My review last year wasn't sure Laconia were the bad guys and I am still in that camp. They attack when provoked, stick to incredible standards and no one gets a pass (see Singh at the end). If there is a subreddit for r/thanosdidnothingwrong/ there …

I loved the Rocinante crew bits of this book, and some of the new tech wonder/mystery/danger too. As far as antagonists go, I found the Laconians only slightly more engaging than the Free Navy of Nemesis Games. There was a "God Emperor of Dune" feel to the Laconian shenanigans that didn't land well for me.

I'm still excited to see where things go next. The main joy for me is seeing the Rocinante crew age and evolve, and coming to know them more deeply every book.

Well, this book changes things up. I won't give away too much, except for something that's mentioned within the first couple of pages: This book takes place 30 years after the previous one. A lot has changed during that time, but the main characters still feel like the same people. I'm not sure that's a good thing - I think the authors might have been able to do more to show us how these people have changed during those three decades.

Babylon's Ashes was one of my favorite books in the series. I didn't like this one as much. The story just wasn't as compelling for me. I did like the way the main antagonist was portrayed as a guy who was trying to do the right thing (in his view) and just kept making the wrong decision. I also thought the descriptions of the Belter culture of insurgency were …

This one while good seems more like an in-between installment connecting pieces of plot. While I did enjoy the story a lot there was too little focus on my favorites from the Rocinante and too many other characters even if Singh and Drummer are good. Singh's especially is fascinating and I should of foreseen his ending as a sacrifice, that was why they did choose a young believer as governor, either he does well, then it's a win, or they sacrifice him to show the people they will do that and it is a win. The only one who can lose is Singh and he does drive this one spectacularly against the wall.. Also Avasarala gets way too little screentime even though she's old now, she barely gets two sentences to say...

I did like the epilogue though with Duarte and Holden and I predict Holden will join Duarte in …
