This is one of my favourite books of all time!
Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened
Hardcover, 369 pages
English language
Published Dec. 3, 2013 by Touchstone, Simon and Schuster.
Collects autobiographical, illustrated essays and cartoons from the author's popular blog and related new material that humorously and candidly deals with her own idiosyncrasies and battles with depression.
This is one of my favourite books of all time!
Brosh’s extremely accurate descriptions of long-term depression would be a lot harder to read (and darn near impossible to smile at) without the charmingly terrible drawings and self-effacing goofiness. It makes for a soothing read in these trying times, and further validates my decision never to own a dog.
I have a special affinity towards people/books/shows/films which make me laugh at the horrible human experience, while at the same time, allowing me to introspect and be amazed at how clear and precise their understanding of the self has been. It's the reason I adore watching a horse whine about how selfish and pathetic he is in Bojack Horseman, or to see Rick treat those he love in a shitty way in a misguided attempt at feeling less alone in Rick and Morty.
In short, I love self-deprecating humor and this book had a lot of it. A lot!
Favorite chapters: Depression and Identity - parts 1 and 2.
I suppose I already knew all of these stories from her blog, but it was fun to read them again. Read all the things!
I've been on those explorations -- safaris to hunt down one's most shitty parts. It's nice to see one illustrated.
Collected Hyperbole and a Half comics, most of which I think appeared on Brosh's website. The humor gets cloying here and there, but like any work of autobiographical comedy, a lot depends on pacing. I read through this pretty fast, and if you see the chapters for the separate comics that they are, and slow down, you might have a different response.
I'm not a huge fan of the animal humor, but the childhood and mental illness sketches are brilliant.
Nice book.
If you’ve never read Allie Brosh’s blog, go do so now. If you enjoy what you see, buy this book. I first came across her blog when she wrote her second piece on depression, and the moment it started getting better. Her combination of words and drawings convey perfectly what depression was like for her and it’s recommended reading for anyone struggling to understand a loved one who is suffering. It's a good starting place at least. Whilst you can read them online, both pieces on depression are included in this book. It includes a mixture of existing and new material
Her drawings might seem slap dash or childlike but they are full of emotion and humour. They manage to communicate everything spot on. She’s just amazing, and funny and moving. The dogs are hilarious. I love that both her dogs are a bit not right and the ensuing drama …

The dogs are hilarious. I love that both her dogs are a bit not right and the ensuing drama they cause. It didn’t bother me, but I know some people really dislike white text on a coloured background and there are a few stories that are like that in this colourful and glossy volume.
Allie Brosh is very funny as always and I've been looking forward to this book for months. It's funny, it's enjoyable, and it's a quick read. My only complaint is that it includes a lot of the material that's already on her blog, which I've already read many times. The book is a mix of old and new, and given the book is a fast read as it is, the amount of new material goes by way too fast. I'm glad she published a book and hope it does well, but can't help but feeling a bit disappointed there wasn't more.
I adore Allie Brosh's website, and was thrilled when she got a book contract. It felt like a long wait for the book, but it was worth it. I just spent an hour in a doctor's office waiting room, and the other patients can attest that it is frequently laugh-out-loud funny. It also has all the heart that you've seen in her blog posts. The book is beautifully done, in full color.
It definitely is not just a re-packaging of material that you've already read on her blog, so if you love her blog, go buy it.
