Review of 'Hyperbole and a Half' on 'Goodreads'

Brosh’s extremely accurate descriptions of long-term depression would be a lot harder to read (and darn near impossible to smile at) without the charmingly terrible drawings and self-effacing goofiness. It makes for a soothing read in these trying times, and further validates my decision never to own a dog.

I have a special affinity towards people/books/shows/films which make me laugh at the horrible human experience, while at the same time, allowing me to introspect and be amazed at how clear and precise their understanding of the self has been. It's the reason I adore watching a horse whine about how selfish and pathetic he is in Bojack Horseman, or to see Rick treat those he love in a shitty way in a misguided attempt at feeling less alone in Rick and Morty.

In short, I love self-deprecating humor and this book had a lot of it. A lot!

Favorite chapters: Depression and Identity - parts 1 and 2.

None

When I marked this as read previously, turns out I’d only read about half of it.

This was good, but not nearly as funny as it wants to be. To me, the author comes off as a little too privileged and not nearly as self aware as she thinks she is. There are a couple of chapters about depression, and I think they are the best part of the book. They’re not really funny. Poignant though.

I picked this up again because we got the author’s new book, and so far, that one is AMAZINGLY funny. I’ll be returning to it now.

Review of 'Hyperbole and a Half' on 'GoodReads'

Collected Hyperbole and a Half comics, most of which I think appeared on Brosh's website. The humor gets cloying here and there, but like any work of autobiographical comedy, a lot depends on pacing. I read through this pretty fast, and if you see the chapters for the separate comics that they are, and slow down, you might have a different response.

If you’ve never read Allie Brosh’s blog, go do so now. If you enjoy what you see, buy this book. I first came across her blog when she wrote her second piece on depression, and the moment it started getting better. Her combination of words and drawings convey perfectly what depression was like for her and it’s recommended reading for anyone struggling to understand a loved one who is suffering. It's a good starting place at least. Whilst you can read them online, both pieces on depression are included in this book. It includes a mixture of existing and new material

Her drawings might seem slap dash or childlike but they are full of emotion and humour. They manage to communicate everything spot on. She’s just amazing, and funny and moving. The dogs are hilarious. I love that both her dogs are a bit not right and the ensuing drama …

Review of 'Hyperbole and a Half' on 'Goodreads'

Allie Brosh is very funny as always and I've been looking forward to this book for months. It's funny, it's enjoyable, and it's a quick read. My only complaint is that it includes a lot of the material that's already on her blog, which I've already read many times. The book is a mix of old and new, and given the book is a fast read as it is, the amount of new material goes by way too fast. I'm glad she published a book and hope it does well, but can't help but feeling a bit disappointed there wasn't more.

I adore Allie Brosh's website, and was thrilled when she got a book contract. It felt like a long wait for the book, but it was worth it. I just spent an hour in a doctor's office waiting room, and the other patients can attest that it is frequently laugh-out-loud funny. It also has all the heart that you've seen in her blog posts. The book is beautifully done, in full color.

It definitely is not just a re-packaging of material that you've already read on her blog, so if you love her blog, go buy it.
