Beloved by millions the world over, Pride & Prejudice is delightfully transformed in this bold, manga adaptation. All of the joy, heartache, and romance of Jane Austen's original, perfectly illuminated by the sumptuous art of manga-ka Po Tse, and faithfully adapted by Stacy E. King.
Fantastic. Definitely among my favorite books.
I just don't get it.
Some of you adore this book. Some of you recommend it as your "favorite book of all time!" Some of you may want to stop reading now.
On the surface, there is nothing objectionable about Pride and Prejudice. It's a classic; one that makes most school reading lists. I didn't necessarily love Austen's writing style. The characters aren't particularly well-drawn and I didn't get emotionally attached to anyone. The plot is slow with not a lot of consequence happening over the course of the book. Neither main character is particularly likable. I do not understand the love people have of Elizabeth or Darcy. In my opinion, they are welcome to each other.
I went in expecting a love story, and I came away with a book about rich people's problems and bad manners. I found myself slogging through to finish it. I can only assume the million movies are better …

I went in expecting a love story, and I came away with a book about rich people's problems and bad manners. I found myself slogging through to finish it. I can only assume the million movies are better than the book, because I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't get the punchline to a joke and I'm looking around the room confused about what I missed. Only read it if you feel you must cross it off your life list and discuss with others.
This was both better and worse than I expected. I loved the artwork. I disliked the anachronistic use of language combined with the contemporary (well, to the author's time period, anyway) clothing. I'm pretty sure Jane Austen never said, "Oh, wow!" However, I did like it and the humor was much more obvious (in a good way), so I can see how this would be a gentle introduction to the heavier stuff.
For me, Austen is the anti-Brontë. One of my friends considers this to be a great virtue; I'm not so sure.
Everybody's gonna kill me for only giving it three stars, but honestly it didn't do a lot for me. It's a nice story, well told, etc, etc... but not something that just blew me away. Guess 30 year old men aren't really the target audience, anyway.
Excellent book! Such a wonderful love story. Maybe the best I've ever read. The 1995 BBC movie with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy is an awesome companion piece to Austen's classic. You should watch that after reading this!
