The book Dan Brown was trying to write, except Dan wanted to be "serious".
No author should start mixing the Catholic Church, Templars, and modern times and events and also wish to be taken seriously.
Fortunately Eco instead takes us on a wild romp through every conspiracy theory short of the Kennedy Assassination without taking himself seriously.
Our characters are in very serious trouble indeed, and the tale is both fast and gripping.
Excellent read, excellent history; the more familiar you are with European history the more you will enjoy the lack of liberties he needed to take. But not being a history scholar will not detract in the least from this very pleasurable book.
