It's a good thing this guy knows how to draw or he'd have only gotten 2 stars. All my "friends" found this book to be amazing. I hate when that happens!
Yes, it's horrible the way he was treated. I assume all those bullies voted for Trump, too. I, too, was bullied and didn't have Jesus to make it tolerable. Yes--I see his religion as helping him through the horribleness, not adding to it as so many other reviewers have. The only way to make sense of the way we humans treat each other, especially as children, is to understand our "fallen" state. Plus it explains all the religious hypocrisy. Maybe knowing that as a child would have helped.
However, as a reader, I didn't need to see so much of it. It's not something that hasn't been done before. It's, pardon the expression, a cliche. Somehow, though, he got …

However, as a reader, I didn't need to see so much of it. It's not something that hasn't been done before. It's, pardon the expression, a cliche. Somehow, though, he got through it without becoming alienated and enraged. He didn't take it out on his younger brother. (I did!) Maybe he's just a better human than I am.
I was shocked that his family (and HER family!) let them stay together for 2 weeks like they did. Is that typical? I'm not from that part of the country. That she initiates the sexual aspect of their relationship would be a cop out, were this a work of fiction. Women are allowed to be sexual beings in that context, while a man would be seen as a predator. Even by me reading it. Imagine how the Adam and Eve story would sound if Adam were the first apple eater. But he was so into denying his sexuality that she was almost forced into that role.
I never understood why her mother was so set on divorce. Maybe he didn't either so he couldn't make it clear to us. But as a reader, it felt like something we needed to know. We also needed to know why she needed space after he went back home. That she reacted the way she did wasn't the problem. It's that we don't understand why. Maybe he didn't understand either but that doesn't "work" for the story. The fact that that's how it happened isn't an excuse. And when he calls her to say goodbye, again I felt lost. And this he supposedly understands so he should be able to take us through it. Similarly his loss of faith. Was it because they told him not to go to art school? This king of thing needs to be explored, not just thrown at us.
If he wrote another draft and fixed these thing, this graphic novel could be as amazing as so many others are already finding it, but somehow, I wonder if even now he knows the answer to these questions. Sorry, "friends."
