Business has been slow. Okay, business has been dead. And not even of the undead variety. You would think Chicago would have a little more action for the only professional wizard in the phone book. But lately, Harry Dresden hasn't been able to dredge up any kind of work—magical or mundane.
But just when it looks like he can't afford his next meal, a murder comes along that requires his particular brand of supernatural expertise.
A brutally mutilated corpse. Strange-looking paw prints. A full moon. Take three guesses—and the first two don't count...
A wizard detective takes on werewolves in Chicago. Mystery, suspense, action in an old-school-gumshoe style. Similar strengths and weakness to the first entry in the Dresden Files. Fun and surprising enough to get me to pick up the third, but I have a feeling that might be it for me.

Dans ce tome, la méthode "die hard" est encore plus poussée : dans la moitié du livre, le héros n'en peut plus de se prendre des blessures, de ne pas dormir (et pour cause il se passe des meurtres toutes les nuits), de sacrifier un à un de ses collifichets et de se mettre dans la mouise. A trop en mettre, on finit par ne plus y croire, on sait qu'un mcGuffin (élément sorti du chapeau) va venir sauver la situation à la dernière minute. J'ai donc moins apprécié la fin.
Le thème des loups garous est pourtant cher à mon coeur, mais le fait d'avoir mélangé plein de types de loups garous rend …

Il y a bien Tyra qui est puissante et femme, mais c'est uniquement pour défendre son chéri. Le pedigree de Jim Butcher lui donne un point commun avec Dresden : traditionnaliste, de la vieille école. Alors si ca vous dérange, ne lisez pas Dresden. Pour ma part, j'ai quand même aimé ce tome 2, pour la manière de l'auteur de décrire les actes et pensées de son héros qui impliquent énormément le lecteur et machent le travail d'imagination. Toujours à l'image d'une série américaine, on sait qu'on ne sera pas très surpris, mais que le divertissement sera au rendez-vous. Pas sur pour autant de ne pas me lasser sur les tomes suivants, même si le fil rouge sur le passé d'Harry Dresden titille la curiosité. Il y a également ce passage qui explique pourquoi les mages utilisent du langage ancien que j'ai trouvé malin et que je reprendrai en jeu de rôle, certainement.

I am thinking that this series is not for me. It felt like it should be a quick, not heavy weight read and for me it was everything but. I had a hard time finishing it. At times the plot simply bored me and I found it meandered too much to keep me reading. There are no exciting "reveals", twists or chapter-cliffhangers that make one excited to see what else is too come. No surprises from start to finish, everything plays out quite as expected.
And so far neither the world-building nor the meta-plot are impressive.

I am thinking that this series is not for me. It felt like it should be a quick, not heavy weight read and for me it was everything but. I had a hard time finishing it. At times the plot simply bored me and I found it meandered too much to keep me reading. There are no exciting "reveals", twists or chapter-cliffhangers that make one excited to see what else is too come. No surprises from start to finish, everything plays out quite as expected.

I can still see potential for the series as a whole. I've accidentally peeked into #12 and it read way more interesting. For me though I'll probably read a few more Iron Druid books before getting back here.
Better than the first one, but still not going to be on my favorites list.
Solid story. I'd give it a 3.75. Decent enough that I'll keep on with book 3.

More fun and mayhem with Harry and friends!
Werewolves. In Chicago. And it's up to Harry to solve the mystery and save the town. As usual, he rises to the occasion while taking an ass-whipping. Harry, seriously, take those martial arts classes with Murphy. I have never seen a man get beaten up as much as you.
There were twists and turns in this one, and a sad part in the police station that shocked me. But it all worked out in the end, natch, and now Harry has a new set of friends to call upon when Chicago is in peril. Because you know it will be, because that's how it all works.
I think I'm getting more tolerant of the narrator, so it's easier to listen to the audiobooks now. Nice, quick story with a lot of action. Something that doesn't require too much thinking. Kind of like Jack Reacher with werewolves and wizards.
Still not entirely sold on the series but my main gripes (mainly Harry) are showing signs of resolution... will grab the next book and see what happens...

You get the idea of how this series is structured but while this is purely escapist fiction there is something about these novels that makes me want to keep reading. While I’ve always said I’m not a fantasy fan, I do like the urban fantasy/noir style novels and Harry Dresden is probably the best protagonist I’ve found in these books.

While I’ve always said I’m not a fantasy fan, I do like the urban fantasy/noir style novels and Harry Dresden is probably the best protagonist I’ve found in these books.
With a new monster, it does not mean that this book will be exactly the same as the previous but the plot style does seem very much so, but it is developing characters that really stuck with me. There is this hidden desire within Dresden to use dark magic, almost like an inner sociopath just waiting to be unleashed. This is what attracts me to these series the most; I’m just waiting to see what other dark secrets we can discover about Harry Dresden while he battles the inner turmoil between good and evil.
The growing relationships between journalist Susan and Murphy are coming along nicely as well, I’m expecting one or both of these relationships to combust and I like the fact that Jim Butcher has let this slowly develop without playing his cards too soon. As for the plot; this is pretty average. Comparing Fool Moon with Storm Front, I can say this is the weaker of the two and I hope that Jim Butcher does offer something a little more in the series or I don’t think I will make it through all of them.
In between reading Storm Front and Fool Moon I watched the 2007 TV adaptation of the series which don’t seem to have any connection to the novels apart from the characters, but now I can’t help but think of Harry Dresden as looking like Paul Blackthorne. Its weird to have an English man, play a Chicago wizard in a Canadian TV show, but I think he portrayed Dresden so well that he is who I picture when reading Fool Moon.
I hope book three, Grave Peril is an improvement and offers something for me to keep reading. I don’t mind a bit of escapist fiction after reading something overly deep or dense. I have Grave Peril on my shelf so I will give it a go but if it is too much like Fool Moon, I think this is where I will leave the series. I don’t want to invest in another twelve books if it offers nothing more than just a new book, new villain situation.

I still think Harry Dresden is a bad ass after reading book two of the Dresden Files. Fool Moon was a really great story, and has gotten me so much more interested in reading more works of urban fantasy.
The way Jim Butcher twists and plays with the classic cliches of magic, and of fantasy, is just wonderful to read. I've found that once I start one of the Dresden Files books, I can't put it down until I've finished.
