Piranesi is a stark contrast for me. Throughout the book, I swung like a pendulum between utter fascination and horror. I recommend it, but it left me hollow whereas Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel, the author's first book I also recently read, was much more high-spirited (although similar themes appear).

Perché questo masochismo da parte mia? È presto detto: da persona non timorata degli spoiler posso dire che Piranesi è uno di quei libri da leggere sapendo il meno possibile e, per quanto sia in giro ormai da diversi anni, non voglio rischiare di rendervi la lettura meno sorprendente di quanto meritate se ancora non lo avete letto.

È presto detto: da persona non timorata degli spoiler posso dire che Piranesi è uno di quei libri da leggere sapendo il meno possibile e, per quanto sia in giro ormai da diversi anni, non voglio rischiare di rendervi la lettura meno sorprendente di quanto meritate se ancora non lo avete letto.
E se non lo avete ancora letto: leggetelo! Lasciatevi condurre da Clarke attraverso i Saloni della Casa: ammirate le Statue che ne adornano le Pareti, lasciatevi ammonire sulle Maree e sulla loro pericolosità quando salgono dai Saloni Sommersi e ammirate i Saloni Superiori dove le nuvole procedono con lentezza. Clarke spenderà molto tempo per farci abituare a questo mondo che si sembra familiare e allo stesse tempo disturbante, come se fossimo a casa nostra e qualcosa fosse fuori posto senza che riusciamo a individuare cosa sia.
L’ambiente della Casa ha un’architettura grandiosa e sublime, inteso proprio come categoria estetica: Clarke potrebbe parlarcene per mille pagine e noi staremmo lì, a bocca aperta, ad ammirare questi spazi immensi pieni di bellezza razionale e selvaggia. L’unica cosa capace di distrarci da cotanta grandiosità è il mistero racchiuso nella Casa, un mistero che sarà fin da subito lì a pungolarci.
La risoluzione stessa del mistero in fondo è un mistero perché ha molteplici interpretazioni, riconducibili a una prospettiva realistica o a una prospettiva fantastica e la bravura dell’autrice sta nel fatto che queste due prospettive non sono antitetiche, ma si compenetrano, tanto che alla fine non ce n’è una che prevale e tu lettorə le accogli semplicemente entrambe e sei solo contentə di aver letto un romanzo così bello e originale.

Et puis… il y a l’océan aussi, et ses marées qui pourraient être dangereuses s’il ne les connaissait pas si bien. Piranèse n’est pas seul dans ce Palais. Il y a trouvé treize dépouilles, qu’il a nommé selon l’endroit et la façon dont il les a découvertes et dont il prend grand soin. Et puis, il y a « l’Autre ». Autant Piranèse est un naufragé, aux vêtements défraichis et raccommodés, autant l’autre est un explorateur, élégant et soigné. Piranèse ne le rencontre que deux jours par semaine, pour des entretiens de quelques heures tout au plus. Il essaie de l’aider dans ses travaux, des expériences qui semblent très importantes, en quête du « Grand savoir ».
Que cherche « l’Autre » ? Où est-t-il quand il n’est pas au Palais ? D’ailleurs, y a-t-il autre chose que la Palais dans ce Monde ? Et d’autres habitants ?
C’est très particulier (je le classerais volontiers dans les OLNI). Il n’y a que très peu d’action… et pourtant le suspens est là et c’est un page-turner. Piranèse est plus qu’un roman, c’est une découverte, un voyage onirique et poétique… mais c’est aussi une intrigue captivante et une histoire envoutante.
Borjes' surreal worlds described in the characteristic cozy style. Magnificent and intoxicating, Clarke does know how to write on magic.
I loved the world in which this story is set. An infinite labyrinth of statues and sea, occupied by characters that I wanted deeply to know more about.
You follow the story through the journal of the point of view character. The best parts of the story are, to me, when the writer's and the reader's understanding of events diverge. It felt like a Hitchcock movie, where I, with full access to the main character's thoughts, started coming to different interpretations of information they've received - and what I knew compelled me to keep reading in hopes that the main character would catch up. I also appreciated the themes of the story: kindness, interaction with place, memory, ambition.
A beautiful reflection on the human condition. And an absolute masterclass in world building. Unlike other fantasy novels, the world is not very deep, but the way it is revealed and layered through the eyes of the protagonist is unlike anything I've read before.
Lu en cinq jours. Difficile exercice que de le résumer, et il n'est pas certain que cela serve à grand chose. Piranesi vit et explore La Maison Éternelle, peuplées de Statues gigantesques et d'Oiseaux. Le livre est captivant sur son début, où il en dit peu sur le pourquoi et montre cette Maison.
J'ai reçu cette lecture à un moment où j'avais besoin d'évasion, de plonger un peu en moi. La Maison Éternelle a constitué tout à la fois un échappatoire, un lieu de méditation et de refuge. Une réalité à expérimenter plutôt qu'une énigme à déchiffrer.
This book started off strange and developed into a lovely mystery that I had fun unraveling alongside the narrator.
Susanna Clarke uses her descriptions of the narrator's environment to the fullest degree. What at first I found a confusing place was clear once the narration started. Piranesi is such an interesting character, and his voice in this book is unlike most others I've read.
4/5. This book is so creative, intriguing, and only the very beginning was hard to understand. I've never read a book like Piranesi, but I hope to find many more.
I really really loved this book. It has elements I gravitate towards - fantasy, mystery. Labyrinths! It also has a wonderful and truly inspiring main character. Add to that Susanna Clarke's beautiful, poetic, image dense writing. And a sly sense of both humor and horror. There is also an amazing audio version read by Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Hard to say much about this book without spoiling the fun. I definitely recommend going into it knowing as little as possible.
Je n'arrive pas à noter ce livre, parce que je l'ai beaucoup apprécié, parce que l'atmosphère est formidable, parce que j'ai adoré découvrir le Palais, adoré la douceur et la dureté des descriptions, adoré le ton de Piranèse et son innocence. Le propos était intelligent. L'intrigue se découvre facilement, mais beaucoup d'éléments demeurent flous et inexpliqués, ce qui permet de nombreux niveaux de lecture. Il y a énormément de choses à dire, énormément de détails saillants à interpréter et sur lesquels être créatif.

Je garde un goût amer. Le seul personnage dont la sexualité est précisée s'inscrit totalement dans le topos du gay prédateur. Je pense qu'on aurait pu faire différemment et mieux. Ce n'est peut-être qu'un élément regrettable, mais c'est malheureusement celui que je retiens, parce que le roman ne m'a pas assez touché personnellement pour que je passe outre... C'est dommage et frustrant.
A very fun and easy read. Some of the fun mystery gets explained away, but there is still enough left that made me want to continue to the end.
The book seemed like it was going to end in a predictable way. I was kind of right, but it didn’t even matter. The ending I got was much more comfy and satisfying than I was expecting.
I like this a lot. I'm not sure why it took me so long to get around to it. it was like a really good, really satisfying meal.
Todavía estoy procesando lo que he leído, y creo que va a permanecer dando vueltas por mi cabeza durante mucho tiempo.
Es increíble todo lo que albergan las pocas páginas de esta novela. Leer Piranesi es muy parecido a caminar por un sueño. Cuando te quieres dar cuenta, sus descripciones de la Casa y sus extraños personajes te han absorbido y todo lo que quieres es desentrañar sus secretos y desvelar qué hay detrás de esta narrativa tan intrigante.
Recomiendo encarecidamente su lectura.

Some Googling revealed that she'd been suffering from severe health issues for years now, and this book was the result of more years of hardship than I could fathom. I preordered it immediately, and read it the moment it arrived.
Wow. So different, so quiet, and so, so good.
I've read plenty of reviews that disparage the book (usually because they felt the plot was thin or easily deduced, or because the narration was too simple or unrelatable), but I enjoyed the hell out of it. I was surprised when reveals came, I was drawn into the narration and worldbuilding, and I found the narrator endearing, if a bit alien in perspective. …
