Tough First Entry

Honestly, if I wasn't told that the Dresden File books get good, I wouldn't believe it after reading this. It's difficult to get through, filled with sexist overtones and waaaaay too horny for its own good. I have no problem with adult content, but when its presented in an immature way it's hard to not cringe. It gets better at the end, but definitely didn't do a good job selling me on this world or this character.

Engaging and suspenseful first entry in the tales of the wizard-detective Harry Dresden. A page-turner in the style of old-time detective stories. Relies on an adolescent masculinity that is a bit off-putting, but I hear the series improves, and will give the next book a shot.

Starts slow, picks up nicely

It started very, very slow, with a ballooning cast and too many pages dedicated to background storylines.

Once the book started to focus on its central mystery, things picked up nicely.

Having read the rest of the series, I must say this isn't a great start. It gives some idea of who Harry is, but I don't think we really get to see him for another book or two.

Das ist mal wieder ein Buch, das völlig zu unrecht viel zu lange ungelesen im Regal stand. Ich liebe diese spezielle Form der Urban Fantasy und freue mich jetzt schon auf die nächsten Bände. Ich mag es, wie hier Klischees aus einem bestehenden Genre (Crime noir) genommen werden und in eine Welt übertragen werden, die unserer zwar ähnlich ist, aber in der Magie funktioniert und magische Wesen existieren.

Rundum gelungene Unterhaltungsliteratur - ich werde bestimmt noch mehr Fälle von Harry Dresden miterleben, die Reihe ist ja zum Glück schon sehr lang.

Mr Dresden keep us entertained from beginning to end with some wild but plot-worthy adventures.
This is a really tasty mix of fantasy, horror and detective genre that won't disappoint if you are looking for a fast-paced addictive serie with a touch of humor.

Glad that's over.

The first half of the book is really sexist and annoying. The audio recording by James Marsters was frustrating because he kept stumbling over words and mispronouncing things.

The story honestly got much better towards the end, which has me in two minds about giving the other books a chance, but I've heard the casual sexism doesn't get any better...

Anyway, I have a million other books to go through before I'll consider this.

Pretty engaging, if straight-forward story. Tainted a little by its time (and attitude towards women), but I am looking forward to continuing the series. I don't know if it will ever measure up to Peter Grant, but is more enjoyable than Paul Cornell's Shadow Police (too gruesome!), and Dresden is more likeable than Felix Castor.

Very much enjoyed it.

Think I found a plot hole, but it didn't detract from the fun. Nice, fast moving adventure, and if you like wizards in modern times, this one is for you. Obviously.

Some of the foreshadowing is a little clunky, but overall it was a very entertaining read. I'll definitely be continuing on with the series.

Happy I read it! I really wasn't sure what to expect when I started listening to Storm Front. I'd heard of the TV show The Dresden Files but never watched an episode or even knew what it was about. I didn't know until recently that the show was based on a series of books.

It wasn't until I saw the newest book by Jim Butcher - a steampunk adventure - that I actually took the time to look him up. I spoke to a few folks about the Dresden series and decided to give the first one a shot. And I'm happy I did.

I truly enjoyed the magical aspects of the story and the mystery was pretty good, too. The secondary characters were interesting, although not very fleshed out, and while I didn't like everything about Harry, I found him a believable protagonist with an interesting backstory. …
