Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission–and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that’s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it’s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.

Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian–while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

I have not read The Martian, but I enjoyed the movie very much and so I thought I'd give this book a shot. It's very good. Heavy on the science, of course, but also emotional in some unexpected ways. I would not have guessed that by the end of the book I would care about Rocky's fate that much, but Weir does an admirable job of creating sympathy for the most unlikely of characters.
Although the story did veer into "preachy" territory a time or two, it was still very good and one that I became invested in. So good job Mr. Weir in walking that line.
Excellent book, from beginning to end! I think I finished that audiobook faster than any others so far. I didn't want to stop!
The book has accurate science, plenty of mystery/unknown, believable characters, and a good conflict.
This is my first review of a book and is a kind of reaction to the one star commentaries that I saw. For sure I have read The Martian a while back and I can see that this book is similar, but I think a lot of people enjoy it (like I did) because of those similarities. Sure, there are a lot of cliché characters but in the kind of hopefully vision of the future that is lacking right now. The stereotipe of scientists from Russia, China, America and other places that set aside differences to save the world is a much needed hope that if the world is at stake we will all come together. Sure, the book is not all fairies and rainbows, the hero is actually a coward sent against is will to save humanity and in the mean time there is almost a surety that there …

Sure, the book is not all fairies and rainbows, the hero is actually a coward sent against is will to save humanity and in the mean time there is almost a surety that there will be wars and the usual humans in the time of an apocalypse, but the overall tone is optimistic and upbeat and is what a lot of us need sometime. So is a fast and entertaining lecture, that you maybe forget after a while what is about, but you will remember that you felt good reading it.
Very similar to The Martian. Better in my opinion.
Unfortunately the humor is (still) not a complete match for me.
Very cute — a bit eye-rolley at times, but a clever story and a fun read
It was good, science was good but I like more characters and plot. A lot of the book was explaining how X is possible.
Wow! What an excellent book. It's so engaging! I feel excited the whole journey. I like the hard-sci-fi shown in this book. It's all about the science, engineering and experimenting in order to move forward. Amazing!
Project Hail Mary is a very science focused sci-fi novel, which resonates with the science geek in me. But despite having a lot of science, that never takes over from the real story. The scenario is interesting from a philosophical perspective, and the story is interesting and fun from the beginning to the end. This was the book of the year for me, and I can highly recommend it if you like sci-fi.

C’est un bouquin extraordinaire. On retrouve le plaisir d’ingénierie de The Martian, avec des personnage ayant plus de profondeur. L’histoire est captivante, j’ai eu du mal à lâcher le livre.
Yes it's a lot MacGyvering in space. I guess my brain likes that, and there's enough substance to it to trigger good musings. No regrets here.
The Martian was amazing, and while this one was a different plot, it felt just as amazing and scientific.
I went in there knowing nothing about the plot and after the first few pages I expected a Martian 2.0, but then it went off on a tangent and it was so, so great. I'm glad I didn't know where this was going because no blurb could do it justice.
The only things I miss a bit are quotes like "Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped" or "In space, nobody can hear you scream like a little girl", but that's a small price to pay.
I thought I didn't like science-fiction, but this kind (I think it's called "hard sci-fi"?) is 100% of what I want in a new genre for me.
What a lovely read this was... I tend to read some pretty heavy sprawling-plot sci-fi, and came at this knowing virtually nothing about it other than having seen The Martian in the cinema. As such, I found the small, contained nature of the story (despite the huge consequences in the background) to be thoroughly refreshing. I was smiling throughout and constantly wanting to read on to find out what happened next. I was up 'til 1am last night because I got close to the end and just had to keep going. Excellent.
